Awhile ago, Toyota announced that vehicles within their lineup would receive the axe. There was some speculation among publications that the LC model may be one of them based on the low sales numbers.

Looks like Toyota has said that the LC will live on! An why shouldn't it given the resurgence in large trucks and SUVs, along with overlanding and off-roading. Lexus also needs to keep it's full size and weight LX in its lineup.

Toyota "committed" to Land Cruiser for U.S.

Good to hear, based on the 2020 "Heritage Edition" we're looking at another year before we see the next LC/LX - which is fine with me as I never buy new.

Heh, fully committed until their not. We'll see what they do with the next generation. As the article mentions, fuel economy is something Toyota will have to deal with. I'm not sure what's waiting in the wings to replace the UR series of engines. Something more than just direct injection of the UR engines is needed.

Perhaps a supercharged 3.5, or a modified 2ur-gse.

^^Every auto magazine source is saying it'll share the 3.5TT, modified of course, from the LS 500. We'll see.

Ha, not sure if the 200 has reached collectible status yet. If history and Autotrader is any guide, both vehicles seem to depreciate only by a few thousand dollars a year (assuming average mileage) after the first few years. Relative to the original MSRP, that is better than most other SUVs.

Toyota confirmed this fact two LCDCs ago and it was discussed extensively here at that time.

Damn I wish that wasn’t true if it was LX570 instead of depreciating would appreciate in value over the next 10 years and I might even be able to make money on It.

I doubt it. When the Ford F-150 came out with EcoBoost engines, people claimed that no one would buy the EcoBoost engines, and the 5.0 V8 option would be the most popular engine on the F-150. The theory was that pickup buyers are the most conservative about new technology and want big V8s.

Instead, the 2.7 EcoBoost is the most popular engine on the F-150, followed by the 3.5 EcoBoost, and both together vastly outnumber the 5.0. Less than 25% of F-150s are sold with the V8.

Turbo engines of today aren’t turbo engines for the 1980s.

I like naturally-aspirated engines in general and V8s in particular. But if the 2021 Land Cruiser comes with a twin-turbo V6, I'll definitely test drive it with an open mind. If it has good torque off the line, has linear performance, I'll seriously consider it.

X2.

It was said that the LC is a flagship for Toyota and they are very proud of it, and something to the effect it will always be available. It makes sense in that it is not a vehicle for this market alone, so if it's already in the inventory, throw a few on the ship headed to the USA. I think in marketing it's what's called a loss leader, or something like that.

Most if buying Toyota will go for the Sequoia or 4 Runner. If they are buying from other manufacturers you'll get more features for the money, as we are constantly reminded by the automotive press who say the LC is dated. Some buy it (LX) for status, but I'd guess most know exactly what they are getting and why.

Thank you Mr. T for bringing it to our shores.

+1 for electric for the 300 ! I hope Rivian brings their SUV to mass market so folks can get a feel for what a real SUV might be like as a fully electric vehicle. Then maybe there would be a chance Toyota might take a leap in the electric SUV/Truck market

Definitely will lose the adventure crowd with electric. Can't charge up in no mans land

There's always a market for catering to early adopters. Imagine an offroad trailer that's essentially a second battery bank.

Yea that would work... but you'd still be limited on how long you could stay away for. Granted that's pros and cons to both sides. Because you can argue the same with how much gas the 200 guzzles now.
Eh I'm a fan of good ole gas/diesel
That's what they should do! Bring the diesel 200s that are in Australia and South Africa to the states

Uh oh here we go again!

I for one would like to see the 300 go fully electric after driving a Tesla for a few weeks now. Ok, ok full disclosure because I know @JohnJB will call me out for it, I drove it for 2 weeks before I lost it to my wife 🤣

Good luck trying to do Baja for a week+ with an electric-only LC... Hybrid for torque and added MPG would be great if it’s a powerful-electric boost...but all electric is a no-go for me until some ridiculous battery breakthrough arrives. Gear...weight...boonies...exploration that isn’t planned around recharging—Just not there yet IME.

Or instead of a trailer... maybe a “40 gallon LRA” sized “subtank” that’s actually a battery bank....

WhIle not quite an electric LC, ICON has an all electric VW Thing on there web site right now. You can give it a try for only $120K....
