Was thinking of installing an larger fuel tank in my 08 LC. Anyone taken on a similar project? What size tank did you go with?

I'm not sure you have space between the frame rail and the rear driveshaft to go any bigger width wise.

Length wise you might get a bit more capacity.

The key is sourcing the OEM aux. tank for the 200 series that goes where your spare tire goes...available as an option in ME/Australia/NZ/Africa markets.

That, or spend money getting one fabricated and then all of the bits and pieces needed for fuel transfer and measurement.

Good luck.

I'm not sure if these guys export (they're in Australia I believe) but they have a few options. A few difference capacities that fit with or without the spare below.

Long-range fuel tanks for the 200-series.

Note: I know nothing about the company and have absolutely no affiliation with them, nor do I know the quality of the products. I'm just passing along information I found when I did a search.

e mail correspondence

I have talked to ARB and Long Ranger about additional tank. below is my correspondence with them. I have not done anything yet, but still thinking hard about it. The leak detection and having to reset is my main concern. Also, I figure if i do the tank, I might as well do the largest one and move the spare to a new rear bumper. There are 2 guys somewhere out there that has done this, so be great to hear from them....

Regards,

Hi Trent,

The price on the tank will be $1910.77 landed here in Seattle, plus freight to MS. Allow approximately 3 months delivery time from when the order is placed and confirmed. This order will have to be prepaid, as it is a special order. We cannot guarantee fitment, and therefore cannot offer any warranty or returns of this item.

Thanks,

I typed up a reply yesterday, but for some reason it did not go though and has been lost :)

Anyway here we go again

We have sold at least two of these in the USA
They have also been fitted in sout america, sigapore, the middle east and africa
Most are for diesel, but we do have Gas (petrol) here in Australia.

I have just finished reading a post on an FJ landcruiser forum about fitment of an Auxiliary tank.
They have the same issue as teh landcruiser.
Most vehicles in the US have a leak detection system and error codes can come up after fitment of a bigger tank because it thinks there is a leak but there isn't
Some guys get these errors weekly, some get them monthly, some don't get them at all.
Some of the guys have bought a scan gauge to remove the error codes when they come up.
But everyone of the forum has said that even if they can't sort out this issue they would do it all again because the extra range is worth it.

The problems I know of in your country with fitment to a gas vehcile:
1. The carbon canister is above the spare tyre where our tank goes.
This can be relocated with a longer hose and some custom made brackets.
This may take a couple of hours.

2. The new twin filler neck we supply to enable filling the second tank does not have a restrictor.
This is a minor issue, if we know the tank is for the US at the time of ordering we can supply a new twin filler with the restrictor in it.
With out the restrictor you may fail some sort of emissions test in some states (may be called a smog test).
All the restrictor does is stop people putting the wrong fuel type in the car, nothing else.
But with this restrictor you may not be able to fill the tanks independantly as we do, but will have to fill them both at thte same time.

3.The tank will not be dot approved
The guys selling the FJ cruiser tank have labeld it "for offroad use only)
I think to be DOT approved a crash test maybe required, this is not going to happen on a small volume product.

4. The main issue will be the leak test the vehicle does.
As stated previoulsy when a bigger tank is fitted the system thinks there is a leak, but ther isn't
I know transfer flow have a bigger tank for the tundra and they may have resolved the issue, but I am not in a postion to find out and if they have invested a lot of time into fixing this issue they are not going to tell the world. Pehaps you guys know of somone who has fitted a tank to a tundra and can find out what if anything happens with this leak detection setup in theis vehicle.

At the end of the day if the customer has a need for more capacity then these issue will be les of a concern and probly worth getting the tank
If it is just another accessory to add to the car then the hassle that goes with a bigger tank in the US is probly not worth it

Below is a few random comments from one owner a couple of years ago
These customers fitted the 180 ltre tank, the same goes for all the TA range of tanks for the 200 series/lexus

Hey Steve, yup - gotta relocate the canister. Also, need to make your own
vacuum hose since the options you "should" have aren't going to allow you to
reach with the hose provided.

I moved the canister to the inside rear-driver side wheel well - fitted in
nicely. Also, made my own hose.

Went straight in. Thanks for the attachments. Feel free to reference me if
you have people with questions.
