Hey guys, I just introduced myself in the intro thread.
Have a little problem with my new 80 series. I have a whine at 20+mph and the front binds up and chirps the tires in parking lots and low speed tight turns. The wonderful 80 series mud forum said it could be the VC in the T-case. Anyone else have experience with this and or a shop they trust to do some work.

I dont know much about the full time cases, but is it possible the center differential is locked? Kinda sounds like it.

EDIT: I just read your intro post, you said you just added a CDL switch or over ride, or whatever you kids do...Thats where I would definatly start now.

First off, Welcome :flipoff2:

Second, how are your wrenching skills? If you're a novice, this could be a good learning experience for you with the right support and if you have any interest in learning to wrench. If you have no interest in learning, I suggest you go to the local Toyota dealership, lay your wallet, checkbook, and credit cards on the service dept. counter and bend over.

I'd start by reading every thread in the 80 section you can on the VC and see if the symptoms are a good match and if what others have done to resolve the issue is within your abilities and time constraints.

We're a good group that pitches in when and where we can. I'd be happy to help if you've got the time, space, and tools to get it done. I'm sure there are plenty of others that would be willing to help also.

It had the whine and bind before I added the CDL switch. I can lock and unlock my center diff with the switch or by putting it in low range (dash lights show anyway) but it does seem like the CD is locked the whole time. When the viscose coupler fails, they said it usually fails locked. I have spent a lot of time and had some good advise from the 80 guys. I have some tools and some wrenching ability but not great. I'm capable of doing anything if someone knows what they are doing to help me. The 80 guys said I can just remove the VC if that is indeed the issue. Last weekend I spent in on my back under the truck changing the fluid in all 3 diffs and trans fluid. Next I will tackle the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, pcv valve, PHH and belts and pulleys. Plugs and wires are easy, cap and rotor I'm concerned about messing up the timing, and I have never changed a belt/pulley that wasn't on a riding mower. Look forward to meeting up and wrenching with you guys.

Don't listen to John. He's a 4skinner guy. He knows nothing of center diffs.

The VC is do-able. Easy is a pretty variable term. I did mine without too much difficulty but I have access to a mechanic in the Chicago area that knows 80-series Land Cruisers pretty well.

Belts are pretty easy. The adjuster bolt on the alternator is a PIA.

Unless you loosen the bolt on the distributer you can not mess up the timing by changing the cap and rotor. Just change the wires one at a time and you'll be fine. The ignition wires are pretty cheap from Toyota and come all run in the looms. It's pretty nice.

The PCV can be a problem. If you do some lurking on the 80 board I'm sure you've heard about it.

Its true.....my answer to you should be put a a340f tail housing on the a343, put a few mini cases back there and center up the rear end....

Actually, thats great advice, good job me!

Edit, noticed you have a 93 LC and have the a440.....so nevermind. :D

im not even sure if its possible...it makes sense to me, but I dont know of anyone who has tried. Probably because 80 guys are about as creative as my 3rd testicle, and seem incapable of thinking outside the FSM....

excluding Ron, Jimmy, Bryan, Brian, and MOST other 80 guys who may read this....

:flipoff2:

there are a bazillion a34Xx configurations and the trans is lagrley module (bell, pump, input, TC, VB, tail housing, etc...) There is some times some work that needs to be done on some stuff, usually though only on the input side cause not all the bells are the same length, so sometimes the input is too long or short etc...Ive often wondered if it is possible.

I do have a mini case somewhere.

But im assuming you may need to swap the tail to a a340f then you will prolly need an mc10 marlin adapter.

Yea I was going to put in a big order to CDan and get everything and do everything I can. I just need the whine and bind gone. The rest of the truck is clean. My neighbor owns Zionsville Auto Service and they looked at it and said the whine is from the T-case, they said take it to Central Transmission of Indiana to look at it. Anyone used these guys before. For the PCV they said take some vice grips and a 2x4 and pry it out and use a shop vac to make sure the seal doesn't fall in.

You guys might enjoy this thread I started.

Now yer just talkin' gibberish.

a gear drive wont bolt up to any a34Xx trans, the autos all had chain drives behind them. So you need an adapter. I know noone makes a gear drive case adapter for the 80. And the 80 t-case isnt used in anything else im familiar with, so you cant get creative an adapter for either.

But since the 80 trans is.....

oh BTW 7shulz, we all suffer from massive ADD here and are unable to stay on topic! So dont take this personal.

....a form of a34Xx I wonder if you can take the tail housing used on the a340f and bolt it to the back of your a343, with little or no modification. Then you can use Marlins a340f to gear drive adapter (mc10), and then just bolt up mini's...or im talking out of ass....

:hhmm:

You guys are killing me...I have never seen such flagrant thread hijacking. :)

Transmission shop is looking at it monday. I think it has to be in the t-case b.c it acts the same with the CDL locked or unlocked. Another question is if it is also causing the whine. I hope so, then I can kill to birds with one stone, and get back to PM-ing.

Alright boys, I'm really going to need some brain power and help one of these days. The transmission shop said the noise is from the front diff and you can feel it if you put your hand on the front cover. So I could still have a bad VC that caused the front to do this? I probably need a new front diff? Can I just change out the internals? Is there anywhere you guys would reccomend that can do that? I will have to pull the front drive shaft one of these days and test to see if the VC is bad. When is the next tech day, sounds like I have a doozy.

I dont really get viscous couplers....

But the front end is not complicated and easy to tear down. Apart from the locker, I dont think you should have anything wrong with the differential, other than maybe ring and pinion. Maybe you somehow lost backlash (crush sleeve failure?) and that could cause gear whine....Bottom line if you need to drop out the 3rd member, you need to pull the axle shafts, which means you need to dig down to the knuckles. Its not hard, a little time consuming, but no big deal.

The next tech day is in Homer glen IL on feb 20th. not dure how far that is from you.

cant you remove the viscous coupler?
