Changing the oil on my 1kzte Prado and had intended to use this "OEM" filter. Noticed it was way lighter and the case felt far flimsier than the other filters I have, and finally actually looked at the thing. Alas, it's a knockoff, completely unbranded.

I'm perfectly fine with reputable aftermarket filters, but unbranded is a pass.

This was given to me by the same shop that installed knockoff injectors instead of rebuilding my factory ones. Supposed to be a good gesture on their part, after they neglected to change the oil filter after replacing the cracked head and I changed the filter myself. Maybe now I should be thankful they forgot.

In the trash it went. Luber Finer went on instead.

Pulled the filter out of the garbage and cut it apart.

Just garbage. No bypass filter. Overpressure valve dodgy. Glad I didn't install it.

I dunno why I cut it open. Dodgy unbranded filter is crap quality, to the surprise of no one.

Good info and good catch, but why not just buy the OEM filter from a Toyota dealer? Current 20% sale with free shipping on orders over $75 from SE Toyota dealers. And 25% sales come up frequently +/- 4x a year:
$22.55 from Fred Anderson in Raleigh NC

Same from Serra, but shipping typically takes longer than from FA:

Buy 4 and shipping is free with no sales tax, or buy some of the other parts you might need- fuel filters, air filters, belts, etc.

Really hard to beat the genuine item at that price, and keep them stocked for routine maintenance.

This wasn't a filter I bought, nor would buy. I had the head replaced by a shop, they forgot to change the oil filter so I changed it out of my own stock when I got home. When I took the vehicle back for warranty work they included this unused filter as a good will gesture. Utter garbage.
