Planning to install these tomorrow and am waffling on whether to restore the hardware. Whats stopping me is that I can’t determine the finish on this. It looks like a black oxide coating that’s faded to dark brown over the years. AND the base metal isn’t rusting (only thing on this that didn’t have rust) so what’s the base metal?

Another observation is the NOS window seals are a different texture on the outer seal. Was this a change that Toyota made at a later date? Just surprised to see such drastic texture difference.

Appreciate any knowledge or comparisons people can offer.

Couple more photos showing this is NOS. I’m tempted to just clean and maybe polish the plastic handle a bit and leave what’s well alone.

Maybe the old seals aren’t OEM? There’s a split in them and I can’t imagine Toyota would do that.

No clue. Looks like injection molded pot metal to me. Still looks black to me. I would dissemble (at least the screw threw the window), pivot pins might be swage in and not easy to remove/replace; clean/degrease than spray it with matt black - several light coats.

As a kid I would have used a small brush and hand painted the assembly.

Smooth skin seal easier/cheaper to manufacture I would guess.

This… “As a kid I would have used a small brush and hand painted the assembly”. I hear ya! Have to save myself from myself once in a while. The number of different coatings I come across on this are baffling to me. Paint, zinc, cadmium, chrome, oxide…. I’m trying to do things correctly but sweet baby Jesus with angel wings Ricky Bobby. There’s a limit. I can always take this apart later and take it to an oxide coater. It definitely is not a painted part.
