Hello all,
Recently purchased a 1KZ Prado and had a scary incident with the ignition.
I was in the middle of cleaning the vehicle and wiping down the interior when the steering wheel locked (Totally normal in most all vehicles, I know). When I attempted to unlock the wheel, the key would not not turn to the acc position. I could unlock the wheel, but NOT start the car. I did all sorts of wiggling and jiggling and tapping for over an hour before hitting it with some wd40 and "Muscling" it through to the on position (I figured its either this and I break it, or I'll have to replace it anyway since its a paperweight in the current state) . After a little torque the ignition broke free and it started up, not before twisting one of my spare keys. It hasn't happened since (I have been careful not to lock the wheel), but the ignition is a bit stiffer than before.
I'll be honest, I'm quite terrified of what's to come if this happens again. Looking online it seems a new ignition cylinder is very hard to come by, and not as easy as a replacement as some of the US 4 runners and cruisers of the same year.
Do I need to replace this ASAP? Or should I be okay? I would appreciate any and all insight
Thank you!!!!!!
