All,

I searched and read a bunch of threads on those with the key warning/EFI relay chatter issues in 100 series trucks (and apparently other toyota and lexus vehicles.). (all part numbers are for my 1999 UZJ100)

For those not acquainted, the issue is that when the truck is parked with the key out and the door open, the key warning will ring as if you left you key in the ignition. In situations where the key chime is not ringing, you may get chattering of the EFI relay in the engine bay. Some have said this runs the battery down. FYI: I at least stopped these symptoms by using an old key blade I had made that does not have the transponder to leave in the ignition when parked.

Older threads have said to swap out the ignition switch (84450-12200) that sits at the back of the key cylinder bracket also known as the ignition lock shaft and also swap the key warning switch (84052-33040). I swapped the ignition switch and the issue persisted. One note on doing this swap: use a shorty phillips and you can do this without having to remove the bracket. I have yet to swap the key warning switch but will do that tomorrow.

Now today while diagnosing the issue (after the ig switch swap) I noticed something. If I just push the tip of the key in the cylinder a little bit while the EFI relay is chattering it will stop. if i push just a little bit further, the key chime will come on. The key chime and the EFI chatter seem to be mutually exclusive...

So I pulled the lock cylinder and while inspecting it, I noticed a few things that I am confused about. The cylinder has a long gold prong that pivots in the middle as a key is inserted into the slot. In the pictures attached, you will see that when key is inserted into the cylinder, the prong lifts up on the key side and drops on the far side... The key side lift and pushes against the key warning switch so that makes sense. What I am confused about is what the long side of the prong does. Is there another switch at the back of the bracket that this prong triggers that affects the EFI relay somehow?

I am wondering if this might be the culprit of the issue if this pivot or prong/arm is worn in some way that is making an poor connection? Does anyone know what this is acting against?

Thanks in advance.

Bump... Anyone know what this prong is for?

Okay.. problem solved... For the record and for easy search (I read a lot of threads and wiring diagrams), here is what I found:

1) The EFI relay issue can sometimes come from a worn out ignition switch. This is the round plastic switch mounted at the back end of the ignition bracket assembly that we 100 series owners need to keep an eye on. I swapped mine out but didn't solve the issue.

2) I then swapped the key warning switch and the issue resolved (so far - only been a few hours, but I would have heard key warning or relay chatter by now. I tested the switch after removal and it looks like the switch doesn't fully disengage the switch when the key is out and the micro-voltage was enough to trigger the EFI or Key warning system.

3) the prong on the ignition is apparently part of the system that supports/inhibits the ignition cam inside of the ignition bracket.

I had to read a lot of threads where no one definitively solved this issue, but it seems that this can come from a combo of the ignition switch or the key warning switch. Test or replace both before you try to get too deeply into the ignition system!

Hope this helps future wrenchers.

Thanks for this. I have the same problem with my '99 LX. I already ordered the ign switch but after reading this it looks like I might as well get the key warning switch on the way as well.

Thanks for this post!

I had the chattering EFI relay and replacing key warning switch solved it.
