Our latest trip.. not a whole lot to say... and not the best trip we've ever had, but still beats not going at all!

The Adventure Duo: Clean up on the Kern

Thanks for reading you guys.. we appreciate it.

Having spent the last 8 years going up to the Kern for our annual scout troop rafting outing, I have to say what Dave and Yosh encountered is the norm for this area unfortunately. We don't stay in the national campgrounds along the upper Kern (and there are a few of them) and this is one of the reasons. The Kern is easily accessible and attracts all kinds, most seemingly wanting to just dump trash! We stay at a private campground right in Kernville - shameless plug, no affiliation, called Frandy Park. Nice, clean and right on the river. It's where the rafting outfitters put out after the runs too so it's very convenient. The Kern River Valley is a beautiful area and when you get away from the more visited areas it's spectacular. Just unfortunate, as Dave's write up illustrates all to well - just some stupid uncaring people that spoil it for all of us.

As a fisherman, and someone who used to frequent the Kern, thanks.

I'm well aware of the trash on the Kern, but take it from someone who has been on most of the rivers in California, that the Kern is one of the worst, but there are others.

Dave,
Did you take the jeep trail up to Sherman Pass? I mountain biked to the peak a couple of years back and the singletrack crossed the jeep trail on the way to the top. After we reached the summit there were a couple of jeeps that pulled up. The view looking east is amazing. You can see the west face of the major Sierra peaks...Whitney, Olancha, etc. I have some pics somewhere. If I can find them I will post.

Thanks for keeping things clean Dave! I enjoyed reading your post! I’ve never been to Kern but always wanted to go. Friends and co-workers warned me about the trash and the “classy type” of people you come across. That maybe why the Kern is in the middle of my list of places to see in cali.
