Interesting design. It gives allot of area for heat to transfer from the fire to the water. You should be able to use the water pot portion over any gas stove.

A good review here:

7 minutes from fire light to boiling water on a 28F day using newspaper and damp twig wood. Boiled too quickly for him to get his grilled cheese sandwich cooked. Under 1 minute for the pot to cool down after water was removed.

With a cookie sheet and a tile stand you could then use it on top of a picnic table.

An issue I do see is using it to melt snow. You'd have to stuff the snow in the relatively small hole.

Mate in oz has a home made kettle similar in principle to the Kelly unit.

They work incredibly well and heats water very very quickly with basically a few dry leaves and twigs. The only issue with any such kettle is that it gets covered in 'soot' from the fuel source which pretty well means the kettle needs to be stored in some sort of bag.

Here's a pic (had to zoom/crop) of his unit that we used last year. Great for heating water for coffee/tea and saves having to drag out the stove etc when stopped during the day.
