Hey guys.. I have a 80 series L.C. (Deisel) but the wiring should be the same.. I have been trying to install my new stereo, but I keep blowing my dome fuse:censor: (which also kills my clock) all of my connections seem good.. any help as to what the "Dome" actually runs.. I would like to check what this is connected to so I can see if the short is there.. any help is appreciated.. thanks

When does the fuse blow? As soon as you connect the radio, or after playing for a while? Are you using a metra harness or similar to install your radio? This info might help us determine what your issue is. If you leave the stereo disconnected will the fuse eventually blow?

o.k.. the last blew as soon as I replaced it, but when I put a 20A fuse in it sparked a bit, but didn't blow... I am using a wiring harness.. the first few blew after turning the stereo on and it starting for a few seconds..hope this helps..

What is the standard size fuse?

In general, you are asking for trouble if you replace a fuse with one of a larger size. Sometimes going from 15a to 20a might help you locate a short but as soon as you find the short you need to go back to the 15a fuse. The wire size is not large enough to handle the extra amperage and you risk melted wires.... or worse.

the only reason i put the 20A in was to find the short! I would never leave it in.. thanks for the advise though.. later..

what is the EWD??.. also I just unplugged my aftermarket wiring harness, and tried to put the fuse back in, and it sparked when I put the fuse back in... I put the 20 in, but only because I don't want to blow the rest of my 10's and have to buy more..

DFMORSE.. that is an awesome chart, but I hope someone else has a solution as there is way too much to chek there.. I was hoping for one thing... Yikes!!

Are you using a general Toyota wiring harness like one from Metra?

A common problem is that there is a looped wire in the harness that is part of the auto antenna stuff. Since my 94 doesn't have anything but manual ant. control, I clipped the looped antenna wire.

I found out to do that in a thread by StressPuppy during his radio instilation.

I also have a looped wire in the new hrness that I am clipping to the fsctory toyota one... I think I have a bigger problem though.. I totally unclipped the wiring harnesss that I am using and tried to plug the fuse back into the Dome slot, and I noticed that it still sparked when I put it in.. I think I have a short somewhere that I will have to track down.. is there a tool I can by to try to save me some time and effort.. thanks again,

Darren;

Yea, I know. Take deep breaths and relax. I spent many hours tracing fuse leads and the EWD is the clue to this. The EWD is the Electronic [Electrical] Wiring Diagram publication from Toyota. It has all the drawings for the circuits in ur cruiser. The one I have is not the same as for the HDJ81.

As mentioned; if u could explain where exactly u hooked up "what" to "where", we might be able help diagnose problem.

For example, was everything working correctly before u decided to wire something into the stock system?

Where did u connect these wires, color code, size of wire and so on?

The DOME fuse runs [on a 94-1FZJ80 USA spec] interior lites, moon roof buzzer, seat belts, luggage lite, clock radio & deck, antenna, vanity lites, etc.

Are u wiring into the engine bay area or the cabin area?

Gets complicated doesn't it! Based on post #3, it is very possible that the wiring harness u have is not set up for the cruiser u have. I assume [hate that word] that u are following directions from the stereo people. They could be wrong.

Do u have a shot gun? That's how I feel sometimes!

I'm putting a new stereo in tomorrow, when I searched old threads I kept hearing about people blowing this fuse due to the loop in the wiring harness. I have a thread in the 80 section titled 97 cruiser, metra harness help. It might help you if you look at that thread. The fact that it blew when you put in a new stereo makes me think that it is because of the antenna loop, but the fact you blew it without the stereo makes me wonder. I clipped the loop, when I install it tomorrow I will know if my fuse blows or not.

O.K. really all I have hooked up is the aftermarket wiring harness to the Toyota one ( I noticed that there were 3.. one that plugged into the toyota factory deck.. then 2 that fit into the aftermarket wiring harness... I had to plug in a couple of wires (toyota wires) they were like butt connectors(they were just above the plug that fits into the aftermarket wiring harness.) I noticed that they were not plugged in and I was not getting any power to my deck.. so I plugged them in and bango..power, but them the deck would keep starting and restarting and restarting.. then I read the manual for the deck and it said to press the reset button for the initial start.. after doning this it seemed to cause the fuse to blow...all this was acting the same over and over again until the last time I put a fuse in then it blew as I was putting it in the holder.. I had just pushed it all the way down and POP there it went.

Yes I have a big gun... counting bullets out as we speak ( my father in law owns the stereo shop, but it is in Saskatchewan).

Try unplugging the factory amp behind and to the right of the glove box. If you have one on your truck. When I first installed my new deck it kept shutting off and restarting until I did this. Worth a shot.

I didn't clip the antenna loop on my harness... I have manual control of the antenna, too. It works fine, the fuse has only blown once for some reason unknown to me.

Erratic- Do you know if the '91 sound system is factory amplified?

here is the weird part... when the deck powers up it keeps resetting/rebooting itself every few seconds (radio tuner mode)... then when you throw a CD in it will play for hours.. I have a feeling that the head unit is F'd because if you hit BAND on the deck while the cd is playing it should go back to the radio and it won't .. also should mention that when you initially turn the deck on it is on the tuner mode while it is rebooting itself.. what do you think??? thanks,

amp is unplugged and everything works perfect.. thanks again,

Does anyone have a wiring diagram they could post I'm having dramas with getting power to my radio/ head unit and interior light?

Cheers

unplug the amp
I just bought an 80 series with factory head unit. Replacing was my first project and this advice saved my a huge headache, thank you! Popped the dome fuse after a few minutes of blinking display. Found this thread and 15 minutes (and a 10amp fuse) later I was up and going.
