Hi guys... Just picked up a '91 Surf w/ the 3l V6 auto. - 83,000 kms. I really don't know too much about the truck, and was wondering if there were any general issues with these trucks and/or things to look into and check out about my new truck ( other than the obvious - oil changes, etc. ) I notice even the CD player won't play our CDs - that sucks. Does anyone have any info re: stereo replacement? Also is quite loud in around the drivers feet area, sounds like an exhaust leak, or are they generally a little noisy in the cab? And what is that small red button for just above the shifter on the floor? I've been looking through the posts, but there is not too much info on these particular trucks. Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks!!! :)

Hey Natty

So you just got a gasser Hilux

First off, the CD's won't play due to regional settings. You'll have to replace.

Should'nt be a big deal.

The little red button. DO NOT PUSH THIS BUTTON EVER!!!! It's the self destruct button, your motor will seize up at any time!!!

Actually, it's just a release button. If you try to put the truck in drive, you need to press the brake to release the shifter. Rather than pressing the brake, you can press the little red button.

As for the noise and exhaust leak. I'm not too sure, mine was a diesel, so different setup.

Well, hope this helps.

I just pushed the red button and got electricuted. Now I'm dead...

Thanks, I'm glad someone noticed!

Okay, another question... Does anyone have any suggestions as to a good place to have my Hilux inspected? Like, some place where they know these vehicles well? I did call Pro Active, but I need the inspection done within 10 days, and they are too busy. Anyone know of a trusted and knowledgable place? Toyota wants $99 for an inspection!

If you have the 3Liter V6 then your Surf should be mechanicaly identical to any Canadian 3Liter V6 4Runner other than the RHD specific steering parts.

If by inspection you mean your OOP/Safety inspection then $99 is pretty standard price since it takes 1-2hours (at least in BC, not sure where you are located). Just make sure you make the req'd modification before having the inspection (ie. change to LHD headlights, Daytime running lights etc).

Both my Surfs (diesels) are loud near the feet as well, like a plug is missing on the firewall or something even though it isn't, so i would say they are just a loud vehicle.

I noticed that the CD player on my new (1991) Surf doesn't like any of my CD's either, however the CD changer in my JDM Toyota Celsior plays all my CD's just fine so not sure if its broken or if it has a region problem like justchillinout mentioned. Changing out your CD player isn't that hard its just takes a while since half the dash has to come off as well to get it in/out.

Some sites you may want to add to your favorites:
Toyota Diesel Madness
Australia Surf Owners
They mainly deal with the diesels but you will probably find them interesting anyway...

Thanks for the info... Yeah, I just need an insurance inspection. I'm located in Calgary... Other than the dash removal, I hope the stereo install goes smooth... at least I don't need a voltage convertor like my BJ-73... any inspection shop recommendations? Thanks!!!

Just a side note, you don't need daytime running lights, LHD lights or many other things that many think are required.

If the vehicle is LESS than 15 years old, then it needs to comply to the National Inspection.

If the vehicle is 15 years or Older, that stuff is not needed and you only need an out of province inspection.

Others will disagree, but I've brought in 5 vehicles so far and I've done my home work. No issues so far.

As for the $99 inspection fee at Toyota, which one? That is a GREAT price. My inspections set me back $139. I've heard of guys that have paid up to $300!

Pro Active will force you to change your headlights, I know, but its NOT required!

Have I created more problems than I'm worth? Absolutely!!!!

$99.00 for an insurance inspection. Pro Active quoted me $45. Too bad they're too busy...

Regulations to meet provincial standards vary by province. In BC headlights must meet DOT/SAE beam pattern specs. Even if you don't need them in Alberta, it is a courtesy to other drivers on the road to switch to LHD aimed lights so you are not giving them a face full of bright light. If your Surf has the standard rectangular headlamps and not the fancier 92-95 style, then its about $95 to get a set of DOT stamped Hella H4 rectangular lamps (with bulbs) from CanadianTire, and about an hour of your time to swap them in, in case you do decide to swap them.

A lot of mechanic shops offer inspections at a lower rate because they know they will be getting extra work as a result. That's where they make their money.

Pro Active has a pretty good repution, but they do force a lot of the changes in order to pass inspection. Where as I spent more on the inspection and had to do NO changes.

So you'll be spending your money one way or another.

As for installing LHD headlights to be courteous, I can't disagree with the advice.
