I've gotta 91 4x2 pickup w/5 spd R150 trans. I just changed the shifter bushing BUT it still pops (startles all) outta 1st gear. The rest of the gears are fine though. Any one else have this problem on theirs???? I'm just really looking forward to dropping the trans. wutduhphuk:confused::confused:

don't fret. It's really not that hard to drop.

Pull the shifters.

Remove the starter.

Drop the shafts. I wire tie the front one to the frame. Drop the rear and just let it hang on the diff.

Remove the TC bushing bolts from the under side of the cross member. 4 total, 10 or 12mm IIRC.

Remove the slave cylinder. 2, 12mm bolts

With the cross member still in place, put a jack under the cross member, jack up. Remove the 8, 17mm bolts that hold the cross member.

Let down easy on the jack and then remove jack from under the tranns completely.

Get some long extensions and then reach up from under the truck and remove the 17 and 14mm bellhousing bolts.

Replace jack, jack up and VERY CAREFULLY get the mass centered and on the jack. Wiggle it out and on the jack. (I have a tranny adapter from Harbor Freight) Let jack down and remove from under the truck.

The worst thing IMO that you have to worry about is now, is finding a new V6 tranny or re-building the one you got now.

personally, I'd try replacing the fluid in it 1st and see if that helps.

so its a v6 right?

with a 2wd, its easy to get the trans in and out.

cause thats what you need to do. all those burnouts in front of the dairy queen trying to score chicks, is catching up with you. :flipoff2:

just jack the truck up a little and slap er on some jackstands.

follow what hilux said minus removing the front shaft. but before you unbolt the crossmember from the frame, unbolt it the trans from the crossmember. use a 12mm socket to remove 4 bolts from the bottom side.

then eat a can of spinach and grab it and pull it out. its easy. only weighs around 140 pounds. besides, you need to build some muscle when scoping out chicks. and since you learned your lesson already in front of dairy queen...muscles is your next best bet.

oh and welcome to MUD :flipoff2:

If it doesn't stay in gear when you hit the gas its a sign that that specific gears sincro is worn out probably from leaning on the shifter while its in gear and your movin. the fix is to split the transmission and pull gears and bearings with a press, until you get to the desired sincro and replace it. But if your going to that trouble you might as well rebuild the whole thing theres not much more to do.

whoops, didn't see the 2x4.

the x member won't unbolt...it's welded in place.

 I didnt know the crossmembers on the weenie trucks were welded! Boy what a PITA that must be. Maybe you can unbolt the nose cone...

I am very glad i have only done minimal work on a 2WEENIE truck. too close to the ground IMO

lol, I've never took a V6 out of a 2x4 but I'd venture to say removing the cab 1st might make it easier :D

(I don't like working on those motors in frame)

Long, and thin, 3/8th's extensions with good universal or c.v's and I don't think it'll be a problem

"too close to the ground"

I bet you have a a whole lifetime worth of experience with long and thin 3/8" extensions, huh:flipoff2::lol::flipoff2:

Just keep driving it. That is what I did and it MAGICALLY fixed itself.

Crazy ting is I'm not joking it realy did. I had the problem with 3rd though. I would drive along and it would not go into it. I could get it in but the second I let go it would POP back out. It wouldn't do it all the time but 75% of the time...some days worse than others....then one day it just stopped. Drove it another 15K miles before I sold it and it never did it again.

Maybe I'm just lucky I don't know, or the 4x4 fairy came and fixed it one night when I wasn't paying attention.
