I thought half the point of working for a school is so you don't have to work half the year...

@4rnr the classic is generally held the 3rd weekend in July but this year is the 23rd-26th.

You can hit any open trails in the hills that weekend without attending event. They may be crowded but if you beat the group in you won't have to wait.
We have a three special permitted trails that are closed year round that we are applying for permits called Surprise, U bolt and Dugan's prospector gulch. The first two are awesome 5+ trails and the last is for stock trucks and boring near Sheridan lake.

I would suggest spending one day maybe 2 in the camp 5 area which has Hal Johns, Kong, Full Size, Calamity canyon, Ubolt, and Surprise canyon

If you all hall ass you can squeeze Iceman in on the camp 5 day

Another day T-back and Bikini area. Then hit Keystone and Mnt. Rushmore for tourist crap if you care too.

Another day/2. Captain Crunch(buggy trail usually), Fruity Pebbles, Cheerios, Jake, raspberry ridge and if you still have time Flat nasty which is a short highway drive. Maybe squeeze iceman in this day if your day ends short or you miss it on the camp 5 day.

Good luck in your travels.

I'll pm you my cell number, if you guys run into trouble don't hesitate to call.

Awesome, thanks!!!

I was under the impression if we stayed at wild bills we had to attend the event (which obviously we would do!), and if we were in the event we had to go on guided runs for insurance reasons, am I wrong?

We would likely set up camp in wild bills for over a week and just move from there. We are all highway-able. We enjoyed the drive from camp to bikini. We are also more of a one or two trails a day kind of group. The rest of the day is spent sleeping off the night before, trying restaurants, doing water stuff, etc...

@slander since you mentioned tourist crap I suggest visiting a few small towns in the hills

1. Deadwood has a lot of history, gambling and great food. Mnt Roosevelt is a great view and hiking trails just a few min drive from downtown
I suggest the deadwood tobacco bar thur- sat night. The Brandon Sprague blues band is killer from 8-close
2. Keystone
3. Hill city has Mystic Miner brewery and Prairie berry wine shop. Also for dinner the Alpine Inn. Expect a wait for seating but worth it. The 1880 train for the kiddos or adults really. You can cruise to keystone have lunch and ride back on an old Steam powered train.
4. Custer(not my fav)
5. Spearfish has the Crow Peak brewery and spearfish canyon(beautiful canyon drive)
6. Rochford which if you like drinking beer has the best small bar in America, "The Moonshine gulch Saloon". On sun evenings they have bluegrass on the porch.
Castle creek campground is badass, hard to find, private and about a 20 min drive from the saloon.
7. Sylvan lake area which has Harney peak 7mile round trip hike(highest point in the Black Hills
Also has Needles highway and Iron Mnt. Road, great drive and great views.

Custer state park is also very cool if you like seeing the buffalo and elk roam around.

Rapid city is the main town here and has a lot of food options:

Local eateries are:
Colonial House (everything)
Tallys silver spoon(everything)
Botticelli restaurant (Italian and best wine selection in town)
Delmonico grill (steak and fish)
Fuji sushi in the Rushmore mall (obviously sushi and good Thai food)

Beer:
1.Hay camp brewery (awesome young locals and great beer)
2.Firehouse brewery(not my fav) horrible service. They do have bands most summer nights
3.Lost cabin brewery this one scheduled to open soon and is a good friend of mine that makes killer brew

Thursday nights (summer nights) in rapid has a street dance and live music where they close down the streets and quite fun if you like to mingle with locals however is very busy and sometimes overwhelming as half the city seems to attend.

Ethanol free 91 octane fuel can be found at the corner of sturgis rd and west Chicago on the west end of town and bobs Amoco on Mnt rushmore rd.

I apologize if I cluttered your vacation thread, LOL. Just trying to help.

Last but not least hope you and family enjoy your time in the Hills:)

@4rnr

Yes stay at Wild Bills tell Keith I sent you, He will get a kick out of that.

Wild Bills has a lot of room, DTC has been renting only half the campground so the back half of wild bills is open to anyone especially if your there for a week + to wheel as your own group. We would love to have you all attend the Classic but if you guys don't like the event vibe just stay and play, you can go anywhere you want but shouldn't leave from camp with the group, the trails are open to everyone I believe.

Probably will only do a week since I need to save some vacation time for a trip to CDA Idaho for a wedding in august and want to go get lost out in glacier for a bit. I also need to save some time for Harlan in the fall.

Edgar, keep on posting lol!

Haha ok, the water fall on Hal Johns yesterday! Most of the Forrest service trails are officially closed tomorrow until may 15th:(
Had to hit the creek bed one more time this year.

Wow, now that's a vacation.
If I were to do one or the other, PYS or a version of this, I would lean towards this. I wouldn't do the whole enchilada.
If a guy had to choose SD or the Co/Moab portion which would you recommend? I think I would lean
towards the Co/Moab portion of the trip.

Gappy

My wife and I were talking about this and we chose SD because: it's a shorter drive so more wheeling/relaxing. I have always wanted to wheel there and aims never been to mt Rushmore. We would have coupled the moab trip with a drive to Idaho in august for a wedding.
Moa next year!

Hard to say. BH's will have more people and will have more of a PYS feel. CO and Moab has some amazing scenery!!! And it must be wheeled at least once. But this year, after SD we will be spending most of our time in Moab, I think, and camping in Moab is pretty bad so we hotel...

We are looking at South Dakota. I loved it out there, and think this time would only be better. I think Moab next year, for us at least, when we can bring Roxanne and stay in a hotel.

Geoff, we would be doing a tourist day as well, since Dana has never been out there either. I would even be up for a pontoon boat rental one day.

Edgar, thanks for the awesome info! I enjoyed BHCC in '12, even being a non event person. Good to know that we can still stay at Wild Bills even if we end up not being a part of the event, but I would think we would join up if we were there.

Will anyone else be driving their rig out there, or is everyone else towing?

Oh, and I'm fine with a tourist day as well.

Sounds like Joe is looking to leave for SD on the July 21st, arrive 22, and stay until 30...

If this works for Geoff and Bryan then we would be there for the event and likely partake.

Yup. I'm in. Towing. Probably leaving from the U.P. from the sound of it. Or at least door county.

Edgar you rock, awesome info!

I'm easy to please though. Jackie should be able to make most if not all of it and IIRC delta flies into whatever town Jenn flew into so she can bail from there if need be.
