Hey everyone!
About 7 months ago I finally fulfilled a dream of mine and found my way into a clean LC. As it tends to be buying one of these, it was a journey of being patient, searching far and wide, and also not without a little internal back and forth (I was eyeing up a GX550 Overtrail + as a potential as well). But I landed in a 2021MY, base model, Blizzard Pearl, Terra Interior LC with 63K on it when I got it and it was a Cali car, so it has lived a pretty cushy life so far. Zero rust.
Lets see, I've used it as a daily for 7k miles now. I really wanted to make sure I knew what it was all about first and also I wanted to get things squared away and up to date before tinkering too much (I did filters and wipers when I got it). I have plans to keep it a good long time so at this point it was a lot of preventative items, a few catchup items, and also just some general items, but I thought I'd post a picture, say hello, and make sure there wasn't anything I had missed. This forum has been a great resource so I really appreciate having the community to ask questions!
Service Completed This Week:
1.60K Service: included oil/filter, driveshaft yoke retorque, fuel system clean, crank case clean, throttle body clean, MAP clean, front diff flush/fill, rear diff flush/fill, transfer case flush/fill, transmission flush/exchange. Included gaskets, materials, conditioners, etc., all Toyota OEM. The basic 60k was done prior to purchase, but previous owner skipped all the major items.
2. New battery (still was on original)
3. 5 new tires (went with Toyo AT3 to try this round). Stock 18s for now, I have spidertrax spacers but I'm holding off putting them on for now. I'm keen to eventually get 17 inch rims with the 25mm offset to deal with the fitment without the spacers but I might try em just to see how it looks later this summer.
4. 4 wheel alignment
5. Spark plug replacement (PN: 9091901191) (all 8 of course!)
6. Gravel shield bracket replacement (PN 51405-60250) [this was i guess related to maintenance the previous owner got and they kinda messed up the holes)
7. Rear brake fit kit (04948-60040) (rear brakes, well all the brakes, were done before I purchased it, including a fluid exchange) but there was an issue with a little rub in the rear when turning when warm and kinda randomly. This eliminated it. Otherwise brakes and fluid are brand new 7k ago.
8. Chassis lubrication (I really wanted to make sure all those grease zerks saw some action), and general seal and window grease. The tech even touched on things like the KDSS release bolt, lubricating the spare tire winch, etc. He was super thorough.
9. Believe it or not, they HAND washed AND detailed it before it got it back... I know... weird right!?
I have to say that while it was running just fine before, it feels like a brand new car after all the servicing (you would kinda hope so I guess but really nice to get immediate feedback, even if it is a bit placebo). I'm super happy to get all the preventatives out of the way and have a really solid baseline for the car to go forward with. I'm really leaning into this reliability thing we are lucky enough to have with the LCs.
After I got the car back, I installed ARB recovery points for the front (I was sweating a bit hoping those bolts weren't seized in), and loaded up the recovery gear for summertime activities! I have the basics I suppose from prior years and vehicles: maxtraxs, Yankum kinetic rope (new for the LC), ARB hitch recovery point, clevises, first aid kits, Garmin inReach, booster pack, Leatherman, blah blah blah.
Oh I also ordered up off Ebay two extra cross bars for the OEM roof rack, and it has definitely made the rack more functional for myself. I'm still kinda debating the awning at this point and need to figure out what can mount to the OEM rack nicely. The 270 degree awnings are kinda cool but not sure the OEM rack can handle it.
Last couple things I have gotten for it are some Offroam phone mounts, weathertech mats for both rows, an OEM Land Cruiser trunk mat, and some Snap Shades for the little passengers in the back. I use one of the phone mounts for my phone of course and the other gets the baby monitor or Garmin when I'm using it. Super clean install. I guess if people are interested I have the whole truck tinted too progressively so it gets darker as you move backwards. It really really helps with UV and heat deflection plus it looks pretty good too. And it came with the OE PPF treatment (not a lot, but something!)
I think this summer will be just getting out and enjoying the rig as is and making some memories. Already been on a few before this service, but really excited to go now with more legit tires! Longterm, and depending on the shenanigans I get up to with it, I'd like to put sliders and possibly a little more protection underneath it first and foremost. After that, I'm thinking some ditch (a-pillar) lights, possibly a different roof rack, and if I'm feeling pretty saucy, this might be the first rig to get a winch. But once all that weight starts getting added, then I'm into suspension and the scope creep continues haha. I'm just stoked to get out there!
