I have a buddy that's just moved to Sask. and is looking for a decent JDM diesel for running around out there. He also wants to be able to tow a couple of thousand pounds or so. I'm obviously partial to an 80 so that's what I've recommended to him. If anyone knows of something for sale- even an alternative to an 80, i.e., 77, 74, Safari, etc., please let me know. He's coming back to the Vancouver area this week and is hoping to buy something.

Cheers.

Here's the link: 1989 Nissan Safari GQ 4x4 SWB 2dr

Another for sale in N Van. This one's been up for ever, so there must be issues: Nissan Safari 1991(Nissan Patrol)

Make sure he gets a compression test and/or leakdown tests. If the unit is turbocharged, he should also check the turbo for play. Rusted frames in the units with rear slider windows is common.

That SWB model might fit the bill. He's looking for an auto. I'll have to see what he thinks of the looks. I personally really like the Patrols, having driven them a bit but some folks find them fugly...:D

This one has been for sale for awhile:

'92 Toyota Land Cruiser VX Limited (lifted, and on 35's)

It was at Cruiser days, and he has posted some maintenance questions here on 'mud.

I saw this at Cruiser days- once again this is definitely a rollback but a lot of truck for the money for sure. My buddy's not looking for a lifted truck but if someone wanted to swap out their stock suspension and tires that would be something for him to look at.

:D

I have a hj61

Your rig would be on the top of my list. I'll pass it on and see what he thinks. He's not really a Cruiser guy yet and, well, usually these types prefer the mainstream looks and comfort of the 80 series.

BTW what's the fuel economy like with a 12HT and an Auto tranny?

Its amazing how often people think my Patrol is a high roof 60 series. IMO, both look very  but dif.

If your friend wants more info on the quirks and what to watch out for let me know. The guy that owns that shorty is a lawyer and I don't think it was ever wheeled.

Looks like he's going to buy a new Ranger or Canyon so my hunt is over. Thanks for the heads up tho' everyone.

 The Ranger or the Canyon will be in the wrecker long before a used 'Cruiser. Down here in Central America I'm told that once you buy a Canyon the only way you can get rid of it is either a private sale or a trade on a new one! No one will take it in trade otherwise!!

I got a little excited when he when he expressed interest in a Cruiser but to tell you the truth I'm a little relieved. It'll be the dealer hearing about his issues and not me. He's not really willing to put the time or $$ into finding the right rig either- impatience coupled with a tight budget could bring nightmares...for ME!

I guess it is better for you. Let the dealer and your friend have the headaches. It sounds like if he bought a 'Cruiser and it needed something it would be all your fault.

Some people are cruiser guys and some are not, OH well, I wish your friend luck.
