Hard to believe, I just got back yesterday from a summer working in Colorado. My refreshed fj40 went the entire way out there without a hitch, and rode some great trails with no problems! And drove the entire way back with no problems! Well, no serious problems.

I have axle grease coming out of both knuckles. Time to rebuild? Anything else to look for before the axle rebuild? Any recommendations on kits?

How long of a job is this? This is new ground for me.

Also, I have some goo coming from the rear passenger tire as well. But I had new bearings in about 4 years ago, perhaps just the seals? What do you guys think?

Wow, that's my dream to do a long trip out west in a 40, maybe some day. Anyways is it diff oil or grease leaking? Diff oil gets past the axle tube seals so that requires a tear down, that's when you might as well do it all.

get the rebuild kit from Robert at www.liquidoffroad.com. It will be about $80 shipped to your door with everything you will need to do the job. Kurt at www.cruiseroutfitters.com also has good prices. The rebuild is fairly easy. Morgan has a really good write-up in the tech section here. It is a messy job so have lots of expendable rags and paper towels. Since you are going to have the front end appart, you might want to look into sending your birfields to Bobby Long and get them heat treated if you haven't already.

Yep, in Thornbirds... gotta admitt though, I dont like them very much. If you are not in sand, they are not the best tire to run, however, they have a pretty smooth ride for swampers. Got my eyes on some Goodyear MTRs.
