I finally spent some time in 4-low with my LX this weekend. The transfer case is quite loud in that mode. It sounds like a turbine I guess that gets louder or softer depending on how fast I'm going. Just wondering if this is normal?

I can definitely hear it in 4lo.
But “loud” is a very subjective term.

Perhaps you can record the sound in a short video clip and post a link to it on YouTube...

Yes, the gear whine is normal.

I guess "loud" meaning I can certainly hear it where in 4-high, I don't hear anything. It doesn't feel like anything is wrong, so I'll just assume it's the normal gear whine as @Chocolate stated.

All of the 3 200s I've owned including the 2 I currently have whine pretty loudly in 4 low at speeds of ~15 mph or more. Obviously it's not a great idea to be in 4 low for extended periods of time above those speeds, but it's necessary on a lot trails with a little distance between obstacles. It's louder than I prefer, and I thought about seeing if a higher quality fluid in the tcase might quiet it down a little.

That is normal. 4 lo has straight cut gears. The same was true in my ‘03 4Runner.

My 100 series did the same thing.
Plus...you could FERL IT since the transfer case had a manual shifter (wish the 200 had a manual 4hi/4lo shifter, actually...ehich would do away with the weird disabling effect other error codes can have on shifting between hi/Lo...

I was concerned because I didn't recall my 80 having gear whine like that in 4 low.
