Australia is a huge place with some very arid and remote areas. I have read that the biggest cause of stranded vehicles in the outback is due to computer failure. When they fail it is pretty difficult to get going again. We can have the heat, bulldust, and badly corrugated roads/tracks.

I would bet that most vehicle failures are electical. And computers are only worse.
I find it disturbing that true off-road trucks are going to some sort of computer controlled tractions control.

Software solution for a hardware problem,

Definately get a diesel rig. The 2F is a fine motor, but I wish I had the 12h-t, I believe. Whichever motor comes in the HJ60. Good gas mileage too!!

The 2f is good too!!! torque yes, HP no. but it doesn't sound like you're gonna be driving that fast. Buy a 60 and make the necessary mods. It'll be the last Truck you ever buy. No kidding. (not to say you still won't be spending money though!). Definately get he OME lift. For gravel roads and washboards it's a must.

Thanks for all the input!!!

I am not considering an 80 due to all the electronics to make it run. I have rebuilt engines myself and am a pretty good mechanic...I like the KISS principal. I would rather have a little rougher ride than have come computer, sensor or electronic tank mounted fuel pump fail on the road. I know carbs, clutches, and points and while low tech, I can work on them.

THen the 60 is for you! Even broken they're more reliable than many newer SUVs. :)

I've seen them in Africa riding around held together with bubble gum and chicken wire. Saw one riding around with no shocks, another with a rear axle not working (that's a big front wheel drive car) and the damn things just kept going and going and going.

I love the low tech aspect, too. No, I don't have power windows, fuel injection, dual zone climate control, airbags, In dash navigation, and yes it's loud, guzzles gas and rides like a roller skate. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thanks for everybodys input!!!

I love diesel engines...I have had several...problem is they can only be found in Canada around hear and I need one with no rust. and...hear in the peoples republic of california, they are hard to register. Although I night consider buying one with a 2f and in a year or so converting it. I miss the smell of diesel in the morning!!!

Keep in mind the market that these vehicles were designed to be used in. Mainly 3rd world countries where roads are more of a suggestion than anything. With little maintaince an FJ60 should comfortably transport you fine for many years to come.

he's wright the landcruiser fj60 is taylor made for what your looking 4 bigguy!

and if you want a little more comfort and luxury and a tad bit more civility go with a fjz80 either way you cant go wrong..., i personaly will go with a 60 and upgrade the springs and shocks etc.

The problem with a 62 is that it comes with an auto tranny. I love driving standard. Check out the mileage thread. There are guys that have 400,000 miles on their rigs with basically only regular maintence under their belts. That is how realibility, durability and dependability are defined.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned that the 60 holds a number of vehicular records.
1 truck, the same one for all the records, too. Most miles in a single passenger vehicle. Most countries visited in a single vehicle. Longest road trip in a single vehicle.
This is their website: http://www.weltrekordreise.ch/a_starte.html

My wife and I own a 60 and an 80. It's a cointoss. I love em both. I drive em both. I wheel em both.
But the 60 is my DD, and the 80 will be her DD when/if we sell her Corolla.

The 1966 Volvo P1800 holds the record as the car driven the most miles on a single vehicle: 2.2 Million.

I saw that very car in Madison at the Volvo delaer there about 9 months ago.

It's owner has had it since new. He purchased a new car from an un named American company* and it broke down on the way home from the dealership right in front of a Volvo dealer. He went in and traded it on a P1800. He has now retired from his normal job and drives the car all over the world advertising for Volvo.

Fred

*He doesn't say who it was cause he's a spokesperson for Volvo now, only that it was "one of the Big-3." But many in the Volvo community speculate it was Chevrolet.

Russ.... If you dont mind less creater comforts then the FJ55 is an awesome rig. I have owned several. If you want a little more then the FJ60 then I'd consider the FJ62. Yeah its got a computer, but thats not an issue. I loved my FJ62. I bought mine from a guy that live next door to arnold schwarzenegger in Idaho. Ya arnie has a summer home here.. anyway its gravel and dirt for several miles until you hit the highway. Wagon made the trip almost daily. Anyway I dont think you will be disappointed no matter which rig you buy. They are awesome and very reliable. I had one that made it almost to 400,000 miles on the original bearings. Many are well over 250,000 miles and still running strong.
