Is it worth throwing money at a 2005 HDJ100 with 550k kms?

Apologies, more noob questions/advice seeking about the 100 series.

I've found a high km 2005 Sahara for sale for AUD$20k and am wondering if it's worth buying and giving it a birthday with new injector pump, injectors, replacing a ripped leather arm rest and any other minor repairs needed?

The car seems to be in reasonable condition. Has had $10k spent on new upgrade suspension and tyres. Apparently runs fine. If I bought it for $20k, I'd have about $10k to spend on giving it a birthday.

Am I flogging a dead horse here? Or is this a reasonable budget and plan of attack? Are there any other things I should be concerned about with a car of this higher milage? I can't afford to buy a lemon and want the car to be a solid daily drive, weekend warrior and future tourer for many years to come.

Thoughts?

At that age / mileage the previous owner's maintenance level weighs highly on my list of important things
itd have to have a pretty nice body, frame, and interior for 20k id think

Let me know what you think. I'm interstate so would need to organize a remote PPI before purchase.

It's been in the same family all it's life and "has always been serviced" according to the seller.

Plenty of Land Cruisers on this forum with 550KM (340K miles) still in regular, heavy duty use. But how that mileage has been applied matters almost as much as the maintenance schedule and overall condition of the vehicle. They may have spent $10K on the suspension but if they've deferred a lot of critical maintenance, that could get pretty expensive on you pretty quick (the parts alone) and eat into your engine budget. Leather kits are cheap and with so many Land Cruisers in Australia and such a strong aftermarket, you might be able to source replacement seats instead.

I wouldn't be afraid of the mileage if the maintenance history is clear and detailed and the truck is in great overall condition. Just my $0.02 (or $0.03 Australian).

Weigh up what you need to spend on it vs putting those $$$$ into a better car. At the end the $$$ your putting in wont make it more valuable. I paid 35K for my HDJ100 Sahara with 175K on it, the cars are getting cheaper post covid etc.

Wow! $35K with 175k on the clock is great value! I'd love to find that now! I test drove and nearly picked up one with 250k last weekend for $32k (my budget and what I believe they're worth) however the guy ended up selling it on me while I was pissing around trying to arrange a PPI to a slightly higher bidder :(

Yep i've been going through that process though. I went down a rabbit hole last night after a conversation with an old friend who is a bit more savvy with this stuff than I am. Big end bearings and worn rings/blow by being the main concerns - the former I hadn't heard anything about with the 1HDFTE though I remember this being more of a problem with the 80 series 1HD-T? I think a video call with the seller to inspect and check blow by is the next logical step! Followed by a PPI. TBH, their aren't much better options out there ATM with either 400-500k km examples selling for $35K or 250-300k km examples selling for $40k! And most of them i've been in contact with seem to have patchy or non existent service records. People are being staunch with their Covid prices so the market is a bit stagnant as a result. Well, that and the economy is on the down turn and people are tight for money.

I'll try and be patient though. I've got a little bit of time on my side but I am currently car-less right now and borrowing a work car so feel like theirs a bit of pressure to sort my act out! haha. Cheers man :)

1HDT Bearing issues are not a concern that carried forward to the 1HDFTE. If your not in a rush, keep looking as you said interest rates are rising and the economy flat, prices on other vehicles I follow are noticeably dropping.

Thanks mate. I did some math and after a video call and look over the car, I was very impressed with it and am now buying it. The thing has been meticulously looked after. Has been in the family since new and maintained to a high standard. Absolutely zero blow by! HDJ100 I test drove last weekend with half the km on the clock had a small amount of blow by. For $20k, I thought it was a bargain!

Damn! I paid $41K USD for my 03 LX470 back in 2006, have done all the regular maintenance like most of us on this forum (timing belts, water pumps, fluid changes). Truck still runs great at 21 yrs old, 215K miles.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that mate 🙄 The Lexus models fetch a bit more, do they not? Yeah I think I've found a bit of. Bargain here but I'm not out of the woods just yet! I still need it to arrive on my door 😬
