Well, I'm kind of new here. So I figured I'd better show off the reason why I read these boards all the time. My truck, is a 1986 4Runner. Nothing special. Not even an SR5. But Onrey... Dad bought the Truck brand new in 1986 in Mississippi while stationed in Boluxi. We over the next 10 years or so, proceeded to drive the truck coast to coast. From Carabou Maine, to Macon Georga, and even did wheeling overseas in Turkey. Now it's mine. And suffering from being abused by two teenage boys. Now that i'm grown, and have a family. I want to completely restore / upgrade this truck to the beast I grew up in the back seat of. The jury is still out on what to do about the front axle though.....

I'm completely open to suggestions, and advice. I'm pretty mechanically capeable, and my wife is a welder. He he he.... I love that woman.

We've got sort of a good combo her an I... I spent 8 years in the navy as a electrician getting really good at electro mechanical / hydraulic and general elecrician things. and she welded for 8 years. So hopefully we'll get this truck back to life. It's in pretty rough shape these days. But in my mind it's the perfect family / trail ride.

I definately see some potential in it - the first step in any new/used rig is to change all the fluids (strain them through a paint filter to catch any metal - good indicator of future issues), tune up (plugs/wires/dizzy), filters etc. From there, see what you got and decide where you want to go because there are so many different directions you can take. Ask yourself, "what will I really use this for / how extreme do I want to go initially?" Plan for the simple mods first that you can build on later - armor such as sliders, bumpers & skids are always a good starting point

Well my plan for now, (all I can do is plan right now). I know the transmision is hosed. I hosed it. and the new one is sitting in the garage waiting for me to buy a new transfer case to slap em both in. Right now I'm on deployment, so I can plan, and order parts to the house. The droplets of oil on the back are from the front diff bleeding. We've changed the seals 5 times, and it keeps leaking. So i'm convinced that the pinion is scored where the seal goes. (dumb crap happens when you pry out a seal with a flathead screwdriver) But that's ok, because I know it NEEDS 4.88 gears, and a rear locker. So best bet is new 3rd members. Leak fixed, power restored. I really want to yank the motor and rebuild it as carefully as possible as well.
