Think it's just a matter of design preferences.
BOV sounds good (and I like the sound!), but internally gated turbo's decellerate quicker.
 
You can use a BOV on a diesel, there is no performance gain, in fact it is designed to deplete the boost presure in the manifold from the compressor to the intake valves so if anything the turbo will always be spooling up after the (WOOOOOOOOSH)
No waste gate is the best like the early HOLSET on my 90 W250 (D) Cummins
