I’m mounting a winch and there’s no room for the control box in the engine bay, so it’s going to be exposed on the front bumper. I have a few winch options though, a Warn x8000i with integrated solenoids (solenoids are new) or an m8000 with a contactor in the little plastic box. Which would likely resist water damage more, or be more reliable? The x8000i looks better IMO, but I’m thinking a contactor would hold up better against water even if it’s more exposed?

I don't know how water-resistant a contactor may actually be, but a single contactor is mechanically much more simple than the four solenoids it replaces; at least 1/4 the opportunity for corrosion and etc. is the way I look at it. Plus, the contactor is designed to fail in the open position, so your winch won't run on unexpectedly. Personally, I am sold on contactors, to the point of converting older winches.
