Once again tried the hike to the Carizo Gorge train trestle, once again failed. But still had a nice camp at Canyon Sin Nombre with Ted…

Beautiful photo!
We did that hike in the spring of this year. We came from the east. Not a difficult hike, just long and flat! I think we did about 13 miles total

Well this was my third attempt in the last 35 years to get to that damn trestle... The first two times in '86 and '99 via the trailhead at Mortero Palms (near Dos Cabezos), this time from the Carizo Gorge trailhead, which is only 3.75 miles and looks flat except for that last mile or so; but in actuality is boulder strewn and quite rocky terrain, difficult to navigate and stay on the 'trail'. Will try again another time and maybe a different route.

Looks like some new washout activity on Oriflamme. Is that boulder still blocking the road close to the top?

Nothing blocking the road, we made it all the way through with no issues. I saw one big boulder part way up, before it gets real steep but it was easy to get around it. Can't remember if it was there when we went down the trail last November... Maybe someone pushed it to the side a bit?

You had to go up the side and get a bit off camber. Possibly someone moved it out of the way.

I think it's been moved. I don't remember an obstacle like a boulder that put off camber near the top.

Worth the view if you ever make it their. Hamilton and I backpacked there and spent the night many years ago, I also rode my mountain bike there a few times, years ago. I do remember not sleeping a wink as I recall pulling tics off on the hike up and in the tent all night.

Turns out I did catch the Goat Canyon Trestle in my video. I modified it a bit so it is more prominent. Also moved the video to my other channel:

I think the rock is at 12:20 in this video. Looks like the trail is more tore up than I remember last time I went through there.
Yep, that rock is still there, I remember going around it and it not being a big deal other than to look out the window and see if it was going to catch the slider or fender. And I'm impressed that the Subaru Outback (albeit modified) made it up that trail with a little help of some rock placements; nevertheless, damn!
