Importing...who to grab

So i have a buddy down in OZ who lives there. If I want to snag one and import it into the US....i know 25+ yada yada, who is a valid company to deal with in the process?

If its 25+, why not do it yourself? Have your buddy ship from his end and you pick it up on this end. The customs paperwork is an absolute no-brainer. Two forms, both have an exemption block. Pay your tariff and your done. If you want to drive it home, make sure to leave Colorado with a temp tag and have insurance.

Oh, and seeing that you are in Boulder, make absolutely certain you keep a copy of the EPA exemption form. Then when you get it home, take it to THE state emissions office and not a subcontractor like Jiffy Lube. They'll do a visual and give you the proper state exemption paperwork.

Thats what I was thinking. The part I have not figured out is who to contact for shipping or how to go about that. I know I want one, but i am toying with the idea of importing a bunch.....

Fill a container and make it worth your while.

Instead bringing in additional Rigs you could bring in H41 and H55 transmissions, 70 series axle assemblies, diesel motors or front cuts, Ambi doors for 60's, etc.

Just a thought

Forget the container idea it is much cheaper to go roro,I shiipped 3 in a container into N.Y and you have to deal with all kinds of trucking issuies and customs is a little more scrutinizing. I have imported 15 cruuisers last year and 3 this year . I have a broker here in the states but you dont really need one,but for the 150dollars they charge me it is worth it to me not to deal with customs. If your serious i can hook you up with a broker in AU. I am new to mud and i will post a few pictures of some of my cruisers soon. If I can help you let me know I will send you my #number

Eveything I've read, RORO is the cheapest. Plus, even with a 40' container, I think you'll only be able to fit one Troopy in it.

Rool On Roll Off.

Your vehicle will be on top deck on a long ferry ride. You can get greatly reduced rates for this "Top Deck" status. But If the seas get bad they push the top deck off into the ocean. It is explained on the paperwork. I have knowledge of this happening once on a load destined for in Hamburg Germany in the middle of the winter. I believe it is called a Nor-Eastern storm that hit. You ever see the movie The Perfect Storm?

you can put two troopies in a container no problem. if you're thinking about bringing in parts as well, then be ready to have more customs hassle unless you just put a couple of parts in the back of a 45 or troopie.........

i have two friends who bring in rigs. they have both traveled to australia and other destinations to check things out. working with brokers seems to make things a lot easier.

you can do verything over the net these days. but traveling to australia is fun too!

spent a month there this year and saw a ton of cruisers, its a great place,.
As far as putting parts in the back of your cruiser forget it because once you do that they have to inspect your cruiser and believe me they will charge you to do it ,I have a troopie coming in about 2 months and I have some 60 axels to put in my trail rig and it cost me 450 au dollars to have them inspect, and the only reason Im doing it is because i paid 125 for each axel complet including differential. You can get the axels here but I wanted a full floater for the rear. All in all you will have a lot of fun finding a cruiser there you just have to know where to look . When I first got into buying cruisers there i got very friendly with a guy who know alot about them so he would send me info all the time (he actually packed 3 in a container for me ) .He is a policeman over there so I sent him some steal toe boots that he loved and I sent his kids some of those wheelies sneakers to repay him for his kindness, all in all he located several rigs for me.
Well good luck and have fun

oH one more thing that top deck stuff is not true ,the top deck usually has the containers on it

Where does every one get there info from about shipping , and the rules of same.

LISTEN It Is very SIMPLE Dont get confused about it ,it is not a big deal.

It is much better to be a paticipent then a spectator .

IF any of you want to know how to do it just call me because i cant be on mud all day . If your serious you will make the call
and you will have no WORRIES... The more RHD that come in the better for me ,so we can have a RHD only Chapter LOL

Exporting older muscle cars to Japan for 5 years is where the first hand info comes from.

Shipping a 1969 camaro Z-28 in a container from Oakland to Okinawa is $2,200.

RORO/Top deck it is $1,200.

Maybe it is different when you ship then when you receive?

Shipping costs are drastically different for the same trip in different directions. The US imports more from Japan than we export to them so there are probably a lot of empty containers heading that away from us that need to be filled. Supply and demand.

I've never heard of the cars actually being on the top deck outside. I would imagine 3 months of salt water spray would do some damage. I could be wrong.

Placing 2 trucks in a container makes shipping cheaper but then you have to deal with a union trucking company, union dock workers, etc then you have to find a loading dock or hire a flatbed tow truck to back up to the container to get them out. I did 2 at once and it cost me an extra $1,000 total to get the trucks from Boston to my house (30 miles) cuz of nickel and dime BS from the truckers. Also there are extra loading fees in AU.

if it happens to be a diesel, are there any problems? i remember reading somewhere that diesels will not be allowed anymore. is that true?

25 years or older the truck could practically be on fire and they'll let it through.

Good info guys. One of the things I am thinking about is bringing some in from time to time to sell so this is all good to know As far as a contact down there. I have a good friend who lives down there and we take care of each other so he will be my eyes. In terms of the containeer, I know a lot ship two rigs, sell one and pay off the transport that way. The roro seems great to me...

I'll admit that I have never seen any vehicle loaded on a ship that I shipped. It was a term that the company used to get a better rate.

Good point. i haven't physically seen it either but I have seen videos and ships in Boston harbor where the top of the ship is loaded with containers and the cars drive in a side door. Who knows? I know I don't.
