I wouldn't say "never."
Michael from West Coast Cruisers has a 2010 HZJ76 IIRC legally here in the US and registered in CA (!!!!) of all places.

I check out his site all the time and he has some really good ones with California tags on em'
Gives us hope. I registered my 1987 fj73 in Florida, it had been recently imported from Venezuela. It is a gas truck so California wouldn't like it...unless it were diesel and exempt

There are plenty for sale, some LHd and some RHD, throughout the USA. Buy one of those and drop $20k into upgrades and you basically have problem solved. The 70 Series hasn't evolved toooo much from 1987 to 1997 to 2006. I was in Nicaragua and got in a new troopy and was like "ummmm, is it 1987 this is just like mine!"

I agree completely except for the part where it might cost 20K to get an older 70 Series up to speed. A good 25 year old BJ74 requires very little upgrading to be just as capable as a new one and in my opinion looks just as good.

There are a few of those rolling around Atlanta. Really nice trucks. I'd drive one in a heartbeat. That's actually one of the vehicles I'd say needs the least amount of money to get up to speed unless you buy one that's just beat down...

I guess I have an "old school" mentality but to me the older, more box like 70 Series look better than the newer, softer
(Semi-Tacoma) models.

Yeah. I am an 80s Toyota fan too. I like the more square body. The newer ones look like they tried to keep that style but make it more rounded at the same time. They don't look bad really just not my favorite.

The older ones look very suited to the trails and woods while the newer ones look more at home at the country club. :)
