I am completely exhausted from my exhaust... At first i thought I had an exhuast leak, but I couldnt quite place it. Ive had the feeling all the gaskets were at least 20yrs old, and decided to do them all. The manifold, and the manifold-pipe gasket were replaced a couple of months ago, but i redid them anyway. After I got it all back together, she purred like a puuttty cat. Smooth, except for my idle of 1200. Checked the carb, wouldnt do anythiung, checked linkages, etc. Nothing helped. Decided it might lay in my timing, as the engine has not been timed since ive had it.

All the way turned, so it wont turn no more the engine will not go below 8*. Im doing it the way FSM says, the way Ive learned. Take and plug one or two of the vacum lines running to the advance, use the timing light set it at 5* TDC as the engine is at operating tempature.

After Ive messed with that, I got it to run smoother at around 8*. Decided to take it around the block and it sounds like the exhuast again. Its not, Ive followed it 17 ways to sunday, with no avail. At normal operating rpms.

What does the timing control that would make this sound, and no its not 'ping', unless its the shells from a .50cal going off.

Help me please,
im ignorant to this engine so far!

I think you might have the distributor off a tooth.

I'd pull the valve cover also, to make sure the cam is timed properly with the crank.

Apparently timing marks are as follows
75-82 is 8 degrees BTDC
83-84 is 5 degrees BTDC
85 22R and 22RE 0 degrees TDC
86-87 22R 0 TDC
22RE and RTE 5 degrees BTDC

if you want to have your head twisted with horrific timing tech check out the last few of Hilux's threads he made here.

or not.  :flipoff2:

just kidding Hilux we all love you like you love diesels. :flipoff2:

just follow the rays advice on the timing and such.

I dont really follow what kind of noise you have. if it is the exhaust, use your greasy paw to feel for leaks around the welds above the muffler, and along the whole pipe.

a pin hole is all it takes for a fftfftfft sound.

does your engine have the air suction reed valve left on it? the exhaust manifold- does it have those pipes on top?

if so, under the int. manifold is a box where it hooks to and also goes into the intake. the reed valve opens and closes kinda makes a weird noise. maybe thats what you are hearing. if you unplug and plug in the connector it should open and close the valve.

noises are hard to describe with only 26 available letters stamped out on the computer screen...

Its not, tried that all. Have a couple of burns on my fingers

NOT this one, to much!

Removed and modified, worked wonders!

Take the exhaust leak sound, add the combined 'tic' of the engine that they are famous for and you get my problem... only its NOT the exhaust
