Hi everyone

I have recently moved to Bowen Island from the UK and I am looking for an 80.

It seems my best bet is to get one from the Seattle area as they are more plentiful. Anyone any experience of this?

I took a look at a couple at a dealer in PoCo but seemed quite expensive.

I've also wondered about LX450 but I am concerned that parts will be more expensive.

Don't tell anyone but I am also thinking about a Subaru Forester as I am not sure ultimately how much real off-roading we will do.

But I am sure I'll make the right decision and meet you folks at an event in the near future ;)

All the best

Ambrose

Hi Ambrose:
The feeling around here generally is that diesel is preferable to gasoline. The American 80 and LX450 are gasoline and certainly cheaper. Many of us in Coastal Cruisers are into JDM diesels which have a longer life and get better mileage. They cost more but if you are serious about off-roading, turbo diesel is the way to go. Subaru Foresters are good for city use and occasional camping on gravel roads. We're talking about two completely different classes of vehicles. Buy a Forester for your wife, and get yourself a Cruiser.

JDM diesel? Sorry I am still finding my way with all this - could you tell me a bit more.

We don't expect to do big mileage so the gas consumption is less of an issue but a diesel would be preferable.

I looked into an LJ78 but was put off by the apparently high incidence of cylinder head failure.

Lots for me still to learn I guess...

cheers

Ambrose

JDM is japan domestic market vehicles. Ones orginally sold in Japan to the local market there. In Canada presently we have a 15 yr import law. So these Right hand drive Japan models are brought over and sold here.

They are much more expensive than the gas USA 80. But in decent shape and of course diesel.

My 1991 FJ80 is for sale. It has the lexus trim package, so leather all round etc.

Looking for around $6500 for it.

I've been told that no diesel 80's were manufactured with 3rd row seats. I don't really want a 70 series so it has to be a gas 80.

Or...I'm also selling my 1990 HDJ80 (RHD), turbodiesel, locked all round, OME lift, onboard air and 3RD ROW SEATS!!!!

oooowwww - you are the man to talk to then - I'll give you a bell when I get a chance but in the meantime how much is the HDJ80?

Hmmm...I haven't really thought about it yet. Depends what goodies you want me to leave on it (the snorkel will stay, obviously, but also has an intercooler that I may pull off) but probably around $15-16,000. It has factory electric lockers front and back, winch bumper, an instrument pod with tranny temp, EGT, air tank pressure and boost pressure, a stainless air tank under the rear deck, viair 450 compressor under the hood, OME lift, brand new 35' BFG MT's. The 3rd row seats I fitted myself, they don't come like that from Japan.

Come have a look at it and we can talk (you can check out the Fj80 at the same time). Both trucks are in Richmond.

cheers,

mmMMmm, sounds like what I would be looking for in an 80 if I was in the market. Would prefer an auto these days tho....do any of the JDM 80's come with leather?

The one I am selling is the auto box (I'm keeping my 5 speed). I've never heard of a japanese diesel 80 coming with leather. But it would be pretty easy to switcherooo-- I could simply swap the leather chairs from my FJ80 with the HDJ, since the mounts are identical.

I just purchased my first 80 from Memphis, Tennessee. It's a 94 with 130,000 miles on it. Paid $6500 US. I am happy with it and the price appears to be fair. Like others say, keep checking criagslist or automart.com, autotrader.com. I spent about 8 weeks searching and bidding on eBay and finally found the one that fit my budget. Take your time and ask loads of questions.

How easy was it to fit a 3rd row and how easy is it to access them?

The key requirement for us is we need 3 proper 3 point seat belts to strap the children in. So the 3rd row is essential otherwise we only have the centre lap belt.

Also we expect my folks and my wife's folks to come out and see us fairly often and so having the extra space for two more people would be good.

But I'd love to know more about the conversion you did to get the 3rd row in.

Cheers

Ambrose

We bought the split 3rd row seat from Specter off road who imported them used from Australia. The HJ has the spots for the mounts under the carpet in the cargo area already. Just a matter of cutting and welding in the mounts.

As for accessability, they're fine for kids but they have to climb over the second row seat. The third row seat is of no use for adults. The third row that we have only has lap belts.
