Ignition cylinder removal without key?

I'm sure there is a thread somewhere...Hoping someone could point me in the right direction on how to remove the ignition cylinder in a 1991 HDJ81 and replace with a new lock cylinder/key set.

Several people reccommended I send the door lock to a locksmith and have a key cut.
After they cut the key, they called to inform me that this "high security" laser-cut key was missing some cuts that would allow it to work in the ignition.
So they sent my door lock back, with the door key they'd cut, and a bill for $277.
It arrived today and I tried it in the ignition anyway. No go.
I plan on calling the locksmith after the weekend to ask how he can justify that price.
In the meantime, I'd love any help before I start pulling the dash apart.

Even your similar key MAY work to force the cylinder to rotate as you attempt to push that pin down to release.

IF you destroy the cylinder, I'd suggest sourcing a new one & all door locks from MUD vendor or salvage. Or carry 2 different keys. Price a visit from good locksmith first.

Are those 277 Canadian $?

Yes, no doubt a GOOD locksmith might have been helpful.

This a RHD HDJ81. I don't know how it differs from it's N.american counterpart, but the locksmith cut a key from the door lock. It does not work for the ignition.
I just finished pulling the cylinder out as it would need removing anyway (to accept the new one).
Once I had it out, I figured I might as well try and remove the split wafers that are exclusive to the ignition, and if I ruin it in the process, oh well.

It worked!!
I removed 3 pairs of wafers (4 remaining). This required disassembling the cylinder/tumbler without the key.

The cylinder and tumbler are a little scarred up but otherwise works fine.
This just means that it isn't "high security" anymore. The key now works the same as the door key with no split wafers....took me about three hours.
