If the vacuum actuated engagment of the front output failed on one the ealier 3spd cases, assuming it failed at the case and not on the firewall, would it be as simple as removing the 6 bolt cover nearest to the breather(getting showered with gear oil), and then pushing the linkage to engage it? My vacuum stuff still works fine, but I've pondered this trail fix before.

if its not the fully enclosed 1you can just pullit out manually ,may need a screwdriver to pry it if it pulls back in then pull the fd button out ,if its enclose you can take the 4 bolts out of the cone and engage it and put it back on good luck

I don't think vacuum shifters have detents....so if you pulled it out, I don't think it will stay in place under load.

I'm pretty sure you're right. I would have to jam the linkage in place with a foreign object(remember, I'm thinking trail fix here).

Okay, if you are thinking trail fix. Go to mcmaster-carr and buy a shaft collar of the same diameter of the shift shaft for the front drive. You would have to remove the vacuum diaphram, then place the shaft collar over the shift shaft and use the allen key to lock it in place. Keep in mind there is no oil seal at the transfer case where this shaft comes out, so you would need to address that with handi gasket or whatever.
I suppose you could pop the cover on the diaphram and clamp that somehow to avoid spoiling the oil seal....but you would need to get creative either way.

If the dash mounted "switch" fails the easyest way to trail fix is to swap the vac hoses at the t-case, if the diaphram fails, just carry a spare...... I have never seen one fail though, it's usually a linkage pin or something else..again very easy to trail fix.... I really wouldnt worry about it.

there should be enough 3 speeds around you can get the shifter piece that bolts on the cone .then you can put it in and out as you need it till you make perm repairs good luck

I'm not sure what you mean there....bolt onto the cone?
There is no easy manual swap from vacuum. It requires removal of the shift shaft, installation of an oil seal, drilling the case , tapping, etc.
Check my thread in my sig line....about page 5 or so I have pictures of doing this.

I don't know what you are trying to do, but maybe you are making things more difficult than they need to be. I just swapped out my vacuum setup for a manual shift, and there is no drilling and tapping necessary.

i take the 4 bolts from the vacum assembly off and bolt the 3 speed shifter on same 4 bolts never had to drill or change anything . if its for temp use even the 4sp one bolts on there then you just push it in or out they have detents in them so they stay where you put them some day ill figure out photos and that will help

I looked at his post, he is using a completely different t-case, I'm guessing it is a split case, although I have never seen one so I'm not sure. :D

Yeah, it's a split case. Sorry....wasn't thinking they were different. I haven't crawled under my FJ45 to have a look at that one and compare it to a non-split. Since that's the situation, I have no idea what you guys are looking at, so I'll drop off. :)

the early case is different but nice to know there is a fix for the split case also thanks
