If there was a well made kit available that converted the FJ into a nice softop, would anyone actually have their beloved FJ scalped? How much would someone pay for such a product?

I figure a good roll cage would cost $2000 MSRP. A nice custom canvas softop might cost $2000. Custom sheetmetal to close up cuts and finish the modifications to the body, body work, paint, might cost $2000. Maybe another $1000 in miscellaneous expenses. For a total of $7000.

If the chop was performed on a stripped FJ, you might be able to have a softop FJ for $32k.

Would anyone bite if this were all real? Anyone think my estimates are accurate?

I might try it if I get up the nerve.

Doubtful, it is one of thos things that sounds great on paper but few people would actually pony up the money for one. And, I think your estimate is low, you will have to strengthen the body of the FJ a ton if you plan to cut the roof off. Heck, people complained there wasn't a Targa top Zo6 so a company designed and marketed a kit and so far the only one I have heard of or see is the company's personal car. That kit is $10,000 but you are talking about people who have that kind of money to blow. If you have a $10,000 kit for an FJ you are talking 1/3+ of the original purchase price.

Oh, and good luck getting it insured/covered if you get in an accident.

I do not see a complete convertable as ever being an option. What I do see is maybe the type of sun roof that some old VW buses had. Made out of cloth, two feet wide by four feet long. I think that would be pretty cool, and fitting in with the retro style. As for structual integrity that would take minimal change, maybe a boxed frame for the sunroof.

anybody that scalps their fj is gonna get scalped when toyota brings out the 2009 fj with the drop top, locking solid front axle, turbo diesel and factory snorkle

No thanks.

One soft top truck is all I need.
I agree. My removable top on the 4Runner is good enough.
Like someone said earlier...a sliding rag top might be a bit more practical, and do-able.

Saw an article on Autospies.com today about a 2008 FJC option of a panaramic sunroof. The article shows one, but states that it is an aftermarket option.
