So a few weeks ago I started noticing a subtle bouncing at idle where the rpm’s would go up and down very subtly. Today, I hear it even more and can see the needle go up and down between 600-1000.

Any idea where a good place to begin diagnosing the issue?

Thanks for your help and feedback. I appreciate it.

This sounds suspiciously like an early stage of ECU failure. Erratic RPMs and shift anomalies (drop from 4th to 3rd, mis-shifts etc) are among the common symptoms.

My advice to you is to pull the ECU out sometime soon and have a look at the top and bottom PCBs focusing on areas around the electrolytic capacitors. I would wager that you have some leaking caps and some corroded traces. I hope that I'm wrong as ECUs for this model are unobtainium. Rebuilding the ECU is a viable option though. Honestly, even if you found no leaking caps, replacing the 1KZs ECU capacitors while they are still intact is certainly the right thing to do.

Best of luck!
