Shock has to come off the bottom mount to allow the axle to articulate enough to drop the spring out.

I find it’s easier to first remove the shock from the lower mount while the axle is supported. Try putting a jack under the axle and get the weight off, use a pry bar to work it off.
I agree. I just did my springs and after removing the shock from the axle mount it was a breeze. I did also use large zip ties on the springs when compressed so that when removing and installing it was slightly easier. Use could use spring compressors for ease and safety as needed. That and a small pry bar and it was super easy for me, someone with a bad back and not much power... good luck

I used two jack stands and two jacks for safety and ease. Be safe as the vehicle moves too much in the video. I specifically purchased a huge floor jack for this truck and have a smaller floor jack, a few bottle jacks etc to be safe.
 
I did my rear shocks today. Did it with 2 crescent wrenches in about 30 minutes.

Also, its easier to change the rear shocks when the pesky gas tank is out of the way.
