How to register a "built" vehicle?

My wife and I have been toying with the idea of building an FJ45 with the Aqualu frame and tub. The problem I'm running into with the local tax and tag office is how to get it inspected without a VIN, or how to get a VIN for a custom built vehicle.

I would like this to be a daily driver.

You take it to a place your state says and they inspect it making sure everything works and nothing stolen. Then they assign a vin to it and then you register it

go buy a junk 45 with a title and use it along w/ the vin. gonna need the parts anyway

Even cheaper is to buy a rusty 40 and register it. Then use that frame and vin plate and stretch and put 45 tub on the stretched frame and you will be set. If in CA use a pre 75 and you will never have to deal with the SMOG BS!!

+1 I'm considering doing the same thing, and you will need a parts rig.

In OR (at least) it's no big deal. They will assign a VIN as a "kit car" and you go from there. BTW, you will need a VIN to insure it as well.

Isnt "kit Cars" a killer for insurnace companies?

Not at all! Especially if it's an off road only vehicle. We have a few different ways to cover it correctly no matter how it's used. You just need an agent that knows what they are doing and wants to do what is best for you.

Agreed call your agent there are ways to get good coverage! Here in Utah you can even get coverage for off-road. Each state can be different. Custom and kit cars aren't that bad really
