how the hell do i get this off?

i forget what this arm is called? any ways its the steering arm the comes off the off the power steering box. i need to take it off to replace it with the original land cruiser one but i cant get it off. i even bought one of those pickle forks from napa that fits around it perfect but it just wont move. any sugestions?

I think you're talking about the pitman arm. Try penetrating oil, heat, a cheater bar. If your puller has two opposing fingers and a threaded stud, try hitting the top of the stud with a big hammer. The impact will travel down the stud into the splined end of the steering box and could knock it loose. Be careful. When it comes loose it comes loose all at once.

Your not suppose to use heat but in big shops they always do.

Put the puller on with a great deal of force and then heat gently, as soon as you hear it pop then you run the puller fast and remove the arm.

when you're heating and prying be careful with those pickle forks as they're not as tough as they seem. i found it easier to jam the tip of a crowbar as far in as possible so that you have no worries of it breaking. also the pullers with the opposing arm that somebody mentioned earlier make the job alot easier, you can probably rent one at a parts store.

You can pickup a pitman arm puller fer bout 12-20 buckz from pepboyz or any of those places... definately worth it. I still had to heat the arm alittle to convince her to come off.

I had to use the combination of heat, penetrating oil and a 3 jaw puller to get mine off. It was an oversized arm that I could not find the standard 2 arm pitman puller on. After breaking one set of the 3 arms on it, just the right amount of heat, force, oil and gentle persuation with a BFH did the trick. Good luck!

good thread here a bit back, i believe it was here.

LIFETIME warranty pitman arm puller, its going to break sometime, its great just
to return it for a new one. I believe mine is a K-D tools.

oxy/ac as a dead last resort. straight propane will not get hot enough.

yikes $94 hmm well i have tried almost everything now. i heated it all i could and it is with hammers used the pickle fork puller with a huge bar on the end, i rented a pitman arm puller and brok it, i made a pitman arm puller and bent it, i soked it in oil, i tried everything. i think if no one has any other ideas im gonna cut it off tomarrow.

dont even try the pickle fork dude.. I just took mine off today with a cone shaped one, Checker has them, but it took alot of force, my 16" breaker bar and all my weight on it to get it to come off, took like 2 min... with the right tool you shouldnt need heat or penetrating oil..

you get what you pay for

mine looks like the snap on one, the cheep 2 fork ones will be a biatch

We tried prying mine off but after about a minute, we grabbed a oxy/acyttelyne torch and heated it up until it was brite red, watch out for grease fires though, they smell lol. after the arm was red, we hit it with a 5lbs sledge and popped right off, u guys must not be getting it hot enough, u need it soo the metal is still orange/red when the torch is off. good luck

OTC puller and a little heat will get the job done, I think heating that up red hot is going to fatigue the metal.

thats kinda what i thought too with the read hot thing.
any ways i took the old arm the one i needed and put it in a 60000 press it was tuff going till she just poped and flew off. they i took a ginider, hammer and chisel and ripped the other one off. its all back to how it should be now and it rocks.

I didnt realize you were talking about powersteering, i didnt think the difference between manual and power would matter when heating the metal, i guess/hope i dint have to worry about damaging anything.
