How stiff is your ......

...... trailer????

Roger, Kowboy (Greg or Brian)??? Just got home with the GN and man it's got a lot of flex in the frame. Maybe too much to mount the camper without damaging the camper.

How can take some of the flex out of it without causing other issues with the trailer?

I know mine's a limp noodle with the camper on 'er. You can grab the corner of the camper with one hand and flex the trailer all the way to the back.

I ain't towin' it like that for damn sure. Weldin' friend of Greg's that has built a buncha trailers is goin' underneath my gooseneck and bracin' up the two main I-beams somehow ...

I think he adds big pieces of pipe across the beams ev'ry so often. He's also gonna jack up the middle and pre-strees it up with some braces of some sort ... kinda like the 18-wheeler flatbeds arch up when they're empty.

If your latteral bracing is level on the bottom of the trailer, lay a 10 foot piece of 1/4 inch x 3 inch bar stock at an angle and weld on both sides of the stock at each cross brace that will be a good start.

then run some tube from the outside top to the bottom of the I-beam every 4 feet, that should stiffen it up good

Nothin's level with anything.....

Thinkin' of either runnin' channel front to back and puttin' the deck flush with the top of the side frame or just puttin' the deckin' on the crossmembers that are here now and having the deck sit about 1.5" lower then the top of the side frame.

I've posted this in trailer tech on Mud & Pirate and have got nothing.....

Mine is fairly stiff, I did not hard mount my camper. I used the spring loaded tie downs that I used with the pickup mount. If the decking is off the trailer it will have extra flex. If the flex is front to back a truss support under the frame will stiffen it up.

Where is the flex Mike? Front to back or corner to corner? Front to back can be strengthed fairly easily with what I call a bridge truss added to the bottom of the frame rails(see my another new project thread). If it's corner to corner you should be able to brace from the front corners to just in front of the axles to eliminate most of it. I would suggest looking into installing cables in a cross pattern with a turnbuckle on each. Should be fairly easy to fabricate and very strong. (as in holds up bridges and s***). Just my $.02.
