Since 2019, I’ve owned a 1999 HDJ100 with 420,000 km on the odometer, equipped with the A442F transmission. It’s running very well. No oil consumption, no blow-by, in short, everything you could hope for from a 1HD-FTE engine.
My HDJ100 is my expedition vehicle, and it is loaded to a total weight of approximately 3,500 kg (7,700 lbs) (a bit too much, yes, I know). My average fuel consumption during overland trips is between 13 and 13.5 L/100 km (18.1 - 17.4 US MPG). I drive up to 15,000 km per year.
I have installed an EGT gauge as well as an OBD11 reader with the Torque app, which allows me, among other things, to monitor turbo boost pressure.
I’ve always tended to be very gentle with my 1HD-FTE. On the highway, I generally cruise at 2,200 rpm (approximately 104 km/h). I try to avoid unnecessary downshifts (kick-downs) from the transmission whenever possible. When boost reaches 12.4-12.7 psi (0.87 bar), I ease off the throttle and, whenever possible, avoid seeing EGTs reach 650°C (1,200°F).
Am I being too conservative? How do you treat your 1HD-FTE? Do you push it harder than I do? Much harder?
I’m planning to get rid of my rooftop tent and interior set-up and purchase an expedition trailer instead, transferring most of the weight into the trailer. My HDJ100 would then weigh around 3,000 kg (6,600 lbs). My target trailer weight (with brakes) would be between 1,500 kg and 2,000 kg (3,500 lbs and 4,500 lbs).
I know the 1HD-FTE is probably the best diesel engine Toyota has ever built. According to YouTube, I know that plenty of Australians run heavy overland setups and tow large trailers with them. I know, I know...
That said, I'd be interested in hearing about your personal limits and seeing some real-world data. What boost pressures, EGTs, weights, fuel economy figures, and mileage are you seeing? What thresholds are you comfortable with, and why?
