how important is the rear spare tire carrier?

hey there guys,

i want to remove the spare tire carrying bracket which is attached to the frame and is bent upwards to hold the spare [in my 81 FJ45LV Troopie] and install an external fresh water tank behind the rear axle and the rear cross member and between the frame....

but i am wondering if anyone knows for certain if there is any stability advantage to keeping it there...is it possible it also acts as some sort of sway bar?

Mine has been removed to make way for the propane tank. I believe the crossbar was removed as well, and I haven't noticed any ill effects....I'll check to make sure....
