Went today to shop for an FJ Cruiser. We were looking for a 6-spd manual, basic package. These things are like chicken's hens around here. I phoned all the dealers (6 of them) and there is not a single truck in the whole city with manual 6-spd, not even to test drive.
I finally found a dealer who has one demo in stock and scheduled a test drive today. After the test drive, we sat down to do a deal. Ended up that the demo vehicle is the only one they have in 6-spd. It is a 2008 though with 80kms (that's 80km not 80,000 km) on the clock.
They were asking 30,000$ plus tax (tax is 5% in my neck of the woods). I made him an offer for 28,000$, all inclusive (puts the price before tax at 26,667$) and walked away. They'll get back to me in a couple of days. Now, if they agree then how well did I do?? (Basic Package, 6-spd)

a) Steal
b) Fair
c) Ripped-off

Your thoughts.. :D

If all they can offer you is a used 08 I would suggest that you look for a private sale. It may take a little longer but you will get a better deal in the long run.

Look on the U.S. Autotrader.... you should be able to find one cheaper then that!!

I've been thinking of one for a while too, and from what I found, you can get way better deals down south!!

just my 2 cents!!

It turns out it is not a demo car. It is brand new but just sat in their lot because no takers for a 6-spd MT.
Anyhow. As I said, I just gave the offer and walked away.
I thought of buying down south, the closest state is Montana and it is not any cheaper than Alberta. Then you have to pay the GST on top of what you paid there when you cross the border. Then comes the issue of financing, etc etc.. I figured by the time it is over, if I saved $1000 I will probably spend it on gas, hotels, and food while driving it back here.
Unless there is some other means to shop from the US without going through all this. If you guys know of any tricks, please share..
Cheers.

It really depends on how set up it is. Does it have the rear locker and A-TRAC? How about a roof rack and sliders? Instrument cluster? Any other goodies?

If it has all the good stuff, $28,000 out the door sounds good. Not many FJCs on any lots these days, so if you really want an MT (and many of us prefer the stick), you might as well get it, even if the counter-offer is $29,000.

Good luck.

Some of it also depends if you want to buy brand new!! I bought my 80 series from Cali!! I would look there for a used one, and make a little trip out of it!!

It's all up to you.. personally, I'd buy used from the U.S. There are some killer deals on stuff that has been modified with lifts etc. But, as with buying anything used, you may have to wait, not get the colour you want..... etc. There are some really low milers for cheap!!

if your buying new, then hey, just make sure your happy!! right!!

Good Luck!!
