How can I tell when to stop adding grease on U joint zerks?

This is where I read about not overgreasing the driveshaft via the zerks. Its a useful thread, but unless I missed something it is all about the driveshaft splines lubing and not the Ujoint lubing.

Glad to find out that I can't overgrease the Ujoint zerks, which wasn't mentioned in that thread.

Quick additional Q. Do the zerks simply unscrew if I want to remove them?

Moly is not the base, it is an extreme pressure additive. Safest not to use moly fortified grease in the u-joints - most are not approved for u-joints. Just use what Toyota recommends, NLGI #2 lithium base wheel bearing grease. Moly is good in the slip yokes, in my opinion. I use Valvoline Palladium - same stuff that is in my birfs.


You are correct not to mix different base types. The base is just the soap complex that is used to thicken the lubricant so it will stay in one place.

Is synthetic a different base than the other two? So you have to clean out all the old junk to use synthetic or is it compatible w/ NLGI#2 and Moly?

Grease is oil mixed with a thickener (base) so the oil will stay where you put it. The thickener recommended by Toyota is Lithium. The oil can be mineral or synthetic.

Molybdenum Disulfide (Moly) is an additive with anti-friction properties.

NLGI is something like National Lubrication and Grease Institute. It sets the standards by which the grease is classified for different characteristics. NLGI #2 is a classification. A Synthetic or mineral oill based grease can be NLGI #2 and it can have Moly in it.
