any of you professional campers used/heard about these?

I was checking one out today in canadian tire while buying the latest in padded toilet seats. A little pricey at 249.99 (the hot water heater, not the seat), but might come in handy for the big flood of '07!

That's not a bad setup... I prefer this one... what do you guys think?

From R & M Specialty Products and it's a little pricier but very cool! Doesn't take up any space, so more room for packing. Just click on the above link to read about it, and to get an idea.

When I was buying raffle prizes for Cruiser Days, I bought the Coleman hot water heater as one of the prizes. It uses propane and a rechargable 12V internal battery to heat and pump water for showers, washing dishes, etc.
I also bought an electronic rust inhibitor for 12V systems, a mechanic I know says they work great. Lots of great stuff for Cruiser Days!

Want to share info?

Sure! Its called a 1/2 ton co-axial heat exchanger. Can get them at refridgeration supply houses. Approx. $110 - 150. You then "T" it into your coolant hoses(small ones that lead to your heater core) There is a 2nd coil within the larger coil that you hook up to a cold water source ( I pump that source with an 12V RV pump and collapsable garden hose) At idle it puts out about 100degree water which is perfect out of a shower head.

The R&M product does the same thing but is a bit bulky because your engines coolant only bathes the inner coils with heat whereas the coaxial coil your coolant in turbulent as it bathes the inner tubing therefore lengthening and improving the contact in a more compact unit.

You can get as simple or as elaborate as you want when it comes to the plumbing.
I wish I had a picture but you have to see it really. I'd say total cost for the co-axial coil, brand new RV pump at Princes auto, and all the connectors probably would cost you$250

Where did you get the electronic rust inhibitor? -Thanks

Toyota sells a similar thingamajig as well. When we bought our Tacoma it was one of the extras they push on you when you are finalizing the deal.
It is available from West Coast Autogroup's customization shop at Harris and Lougheed in Pitt Meadows. I cant remember how much it was, I want to say around 250$....

One nice thing about the Cambodian Tire water heater is that it is portable and could be taken anywhere in another vehicle like the wife's econo-beater. After I bought one for the Cruiser Days raffle, I was pondering whether to get one for myself and whether it was worth $250 plus tax, to get some hot water. Then I decided that its simpler and cheaper just to heat some hot water up on the Coleman stove in a pot and pour it into the solar shower and hang it from a tree instead. Less tonnage in the back too. Still, if I won it in the raffle I sure wouldn't complain.

That's the bonus of having a vehicle mounted system, less tonnage. I have seen lots of guys install the pump under the hood (and of course the heat exchanger). Then all you need to carry around is hoses.

Bill, do you actually think the "rust inhibitor" works? Please..... the idea is that you positively charge the body with electricity and magic! no rust. Sorry, that's a fairy tale. But wait, if I buy 2 of them and wire them into my truck will it start turning the rust back to metal? In that case 3 of them should get me solid metal everywhere and a new pain job! Sweet!

Hello CoveredInRedMud:
This electronic rust inhibitor is called CounterAct for SUV's. It sells for about $250-$300. Canadian bucks. I don't know if it works or not, but I'll take it if I win it at Cruiser Days. It may not work on my 24V system anyway.
I had a Nissan pickup that had uncontrolable rust. I believe it was made of cheap recycled steel that was full of impurities and other metals. I think the dissimilar metals were swapping ions/electrons/electric charges and that promoted the corrosion. Who knows if this device may work or not. The only way is to try, and my master mechanic friend Klaus says it works. So there!
