Before i start I have read the forum and tried everything suggested.

I have a 83 yota with 22r. I have replaced the head and gasket. Timing chain and tensioner, water pump new, with electric fan no shroud, no thermostat.

I have flushed the radiator and backflushed twice. Rad. filled with 50/50 green. I know there is an argument bout red and green but I doubt that it would cause overheating.

The truck runs cool for about 20 min while getting up to temp then slowly gets hotter as i drive. If i am sitting it gets hot faster.

I have no idea what to do. Replace rad? install shroud?
I am out of idea's. Please help.

Running a little bit lean will blister your spark plugs & get you a little warm. Running way lean will fry the squirrel. If you are 100% positive of your cooling system then check your air fuel ratio. If you don't have access to a shop that can check it for you, get an old guy that used to tune back in the carburetor days to read your plugs.

I ll check the plugs in the morning. How big should the electric fan be?

Another question. I replaced the water pump with a new oem pump. I squeezed the bottom hose while the truck was ruuning and getting warm. The hose was hot but it did not feel full of water I could flatten it with my hand.

How would I check to see if the new water pump is bad? Wouldn't be the first new part to be no good.

In your first post you mention not having a thermostat. If that is the case then with a cold engine you should be able to remove the cap, look into the tank, & see the water moving through the tank. Watch the little flakes & things that you wish weren't in there go past. As far as electric fan size I don't beleive in them. I ran a flex-a-lite 16" on Spot & I ran Taurus fans on the stroker for a little while. Neither of them were equal to the performance of a stock fan & shroud, & one trip through Matagorda bay killed the flex-a-lite.

I will check rad. tommorow to see if I have flow.

Is the bottom hose supposed to be full while truck the truck is running? I can collapse it all the way while the truck is coming up to temp. After it gets hot the hose seems really full and hot.

X2 on the elec fan... the PO of my mini had dropped a wrench and killed 2 blades on the fan, and i took it off and ran a elec. one. Worked fine for local not-so-long trips, but the first time i had the truck on open road the temp sky rocketed, and when a stoplight turned red... I wasnt having fun. So i left the elec pusher fan on and put a stock toyota ($$$ from dealership...) on and havent had heating or cooling probs since.

If there is any water at all in the radiator, then the lower hose is full of water. When cool the system is at or near atmospheric pressure, because of the way the radiator cap functions. When hot the the system may have up to 14psi, if you have a 14psi cap on there, so the hose will feel harder. Are you losing much water while driving? Have you noticed the cooling system pressurizing beyond 14psi (burping out of the overflow port) before reaching 200 degrees or so? These are symptoms of a leaking head gasket, specifically of compression pressurizing the water jacket. A small leak can cause precisely the overheating symptoms that you have described.

Does the temp go down when you turn on the heat full blast? Maybe your radiator is plugged? Have you modified the cooling system to where any of the hoses are higher than the cap and might hold air? Are the heater hoses reversed?

Did you have your cylinder head machined flat before you put on your new head gasket? If not, it is probably still leaking. Always, Always have the head machined flat.

Had the head machined and pressure checked. No the hoses are all in the stock location. have not tried the heater yet. I live in S. Florida and never even thought to turn on the heater. Will check tom. about the heater and temp going down.

I am looking for a shroud rite now and cant seem to find one. If I find one I will put the fan and clutch on to see if that helps. I am running a single electric fan becouse I dont have a shroud. Truck didnt come with one.

Timing too advanced.

And you don't need a 50/50 mix. Distilled water or "water wetter" will do fine...

And I can't confirm this, but a dude on another site said a truck will overheat with no T-stat at high speeds b/c the water won't be in the rad long enough to cool it...

I know my 20/22R Hybrid with a 2 core and 160 t-stat hates high speeds... It overheats...

And get a 3 core. One straight out of a any V6 should work. My RTE 4Runner has one too, and don't let trans cooling lines stop you.

Neither of them were equal to the performance of a stock fan & shroud, & one trip through Matagorda bay killed the flex-a-lite.

Matagorda seems to be great at tearing vehicles up. Especially when you get back towards the bay and find a blue hole...

Truck fixed!

Here is what I did. Ditched the electric fans, They suck. Fabricated a new shroud out of 26 guage steel. That was a little tricky the fan actually hangs below the rad. a little. I could not find one so this will have to work. I also installed an 180 degree thermostat. Topped off all fluid.

I ran truck hard for about an hour around the block and let sit in drive for about 20 min and the temp guage stayed in the middle never went passed half way.

Thanks again for the help! I have learned this motor inside and out in the last month. Next on the list 5.29's lockers and longfields.
