No, not really. Here's an overall (with a hi-lift, jack, and a bag on trash on it). If I was to do it again, I'd weld in some more perpendicular braces that would run the length of the vehicle (someday I will.)

Hijack it I am interested in the trailer too and I'd like to see how far this can go...so feel free it's all on the same subject if it's homemade!

When I decided to build a trailer, I had several design objectives in mind when I put my design down on paper:
-I wanted it to be as light weight as possible but still be able to build it with the tools I had.
-I wanted it to be as small as possible but still big enough to be useful as a trail trailer.
-It had to have 6x5.5 lug pattern and fit the same spare size as the fj40 tow rig.
-It had to have as much or more ground clearance as the tow rig (SOA fj40).
-It had to have a drop down gate for easier loading/unloading.
-It was important to keep trail maneuverability as high as possible

I decided to build it from new materials. I used 2"x3" .095 wall rectangle steel tube for the frame side rails cross members and 2”x4” .120 wall rectangle tube for the rear cross-member/bumper. I built a custom axle in order to use land cruiser spindles, hubs, etc. I also fabricated mounts to use fj40 stock rear springs in a SOA configuration to approximate the height of my SOA cruiser. Front of frame incorporates a storage platform and a long section of 2”x2” I.D. receiver in incorporated for either a pintle ring or a more common 2” ball hitch. This allows the trailer to be set up for street or trail in a matter of minutes. These removable sections were made long enough so that when backing up the trailer would swing 90 degrees to the tow rig without binding or breaking anything on the trailer or fj40. This has come in handy many times on the trail where backing up to approach an obstacle from a different line is necessary. The box is mounted to the frame using 4 bolts. The reason for bolting instead of welding was to allow a different box or platform design to be installed instead the current one. It also makes it easier to perform repairs to the frame or box in case of trail or street damage.

Wow Mike that is awesome....I'm almost speechless...I have to say that your trailer is one of the most hardcore I've every seen!, and the fact that you used fj40 parts makes it even better...great work man that one is going to be hard to top!

Its easy, just make a trip to DMV and fill out a "statement of construction" form and sign it. Then pay the normal registration fees. A small (goes by weight) trailer registration is about $50 here in CA the last time I registered one.

When you go to DMV, just be sure to register the trailer within 30 days of finishing the construction otherwise if you admit to having the trailer (or vehicle) in a finished and useable condition for longer than 30 days without current registration, they will charge you penalties. Don't you just love these kinds of laws?
