All kidding aside, I think we may be seeing new sources opening up for gray market imports of vehicles in nice condition. Prices are still very high in Japan. The same goes for Europe and it is hard to find vehicles with low kms and no rust.
While the import market is still a very small fraction of the used vehicle market in Canada, I can imagine the same people that hated the JDMs would really hate LHD imports. The only argument they have now against the RHDs is that they are RHDs.

Just going on those 3 Safaris, I think that the prices are probably better equal or better to those in Japan. I think if you had a LHD and an equal condition RHD in a Japanese auction that the LHD would fetch a much higher price.
Seeing that there appears to be quite a few Pakistani exporter/importers, I would not be surprised to see them finding sources in the Middle East. While rust may not be a problem, extreme wear may make those sources less desirable. Also, not all desert regions are without rust problems. Some deserts have quite a high salt content in the dust. That is the reason why some Aussie Cruiser that have never been out of the desert are full of rust.
Another thought, the down side of finding new sources for good condition LHD for import is that the value of the RHD and domestically sold Land Cruisers could drop significantly.
I think its already to late on that one.
Yes, the RHD JDM imports killed the value of the domestically sold Land Cruisers. Now the volume and the end of the JDM craze is hurting the value of the JDM Land Cruisers. For those that last the 25 years, we might see their value spike again when they become available for export into the US.
Already there are some 61s and 73s/74s are getting very close to the export age. I have yet to have anyone come up to me in Canada and offer to buy my Safari. Every time I drive into the states I get at least one offer. What surprises me is that there are more people who know what it is in the US than in Canada. Likely it is just the number of people who have served or are serving in the US military that leads to the greater recognition there.
More Datsun fans in the US I bet.
JDM is dead here, look at the value drop on all of them in the last two years. Its like driving off the lot in a new Chevy. The domestic (USDM) counterparts took a bit of a hit with the JDM craze but they have been much less impacted as of late.
I know when I was looking for a LC I actively avoiding anything JDM because of the RHD.
I would not say JDM is dead. It's just like any relationship, few make it past the infatuation stage. Those that do end up married. So what we got now is the few JDM guys that got married <to their rigs> and are working to keep their marriage together and add some spice.

It was like a light switch after my 81 sold or even a little before that. The craze stopped. People still ask me about importing or getting them stuff from Japan. I tell them unless your heart is set on a specific truck that your planning on keeping for a long time it is not worth it.
I need to start looking into importing from other places
