I know, this probably belongs in the 60 section, but all those with a JDM 60 that has cable locker usually hang out here anyways (still, sorry if it doesn't belong, move as necessary).
A little while back my good friend Robert ended up noticing he didn't have a rear locker anymore. After some quick tests on the trails we figured out something internal is broken because everything on the outside (including the pin going into the diff) was engaging perfectly fine. When we got home I dropped the diff and found the culprit - I was shocked at what happened.
and surprised that he didn't have more damage than this:
after everything has managed to grind itself to a very nice and fine powder all I could find of the missing teeth was this:
I looked around and found only one other record of someone breaking one of these in this fashion. I am sure there must have been at least a few more but they were not documented on any web searches I came across.
I ended up ordering parts from Amayama.com , Never tried them and was a bit sceptical about ordering $700 worth of parts, but that was still $400 less than the best price I could find and about $600-700 less than most.
The parts showed up in less than three weeks, covered in brand new Toyota factory boxes and measured perfectly. I ordered both the main housing and the matching collar, since the part numbers changed since the 1989 he had and were superseded by a new number, and I didn't want to risk installing a gear that could have had microfractures I figured it was a safer bet. Good thing I did because it would not have fit as I have learned on assembly.
Everything went in very well and the machining was dead on accurate, didn't even have to adjust the shims and still got the same wear pattern and backlash.
