Hello all.

I am currently trying to diagnose a noise my HJ47 troopy has had for a while.

With the clutch pedal out and revs under 1500 i get a crunchy rattle from the transmission. With the clutch in and/or revs above 1500 the noise goes away. If I roll along in 1st gear the noise still only comes about when the clutch is engaged.

I initially thought it was a clutch release bearing giving me troubles but wouldn't that make noise under load? i.e. when the pedal was in and the clutch plate was getting pushed. Not when the clutch is engaged and the pedal is above the friction point.

My other idea is that it is the input bearing of the gearbox as this would be under load when the clutch is engaged but would not neccesarily make noise when the gearbox isn't being loaded from the enigne?

The gearbox and transer functions fine, its a 4 speed split case.

I'm going on a 4000km drive with a full troopload and trailer in September, so i really need to get this fixed.

I'm going to drop the box out next week but i've never done this before.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Strange it goes away after 1500rpm. Possibly still there, but harder to hear over increased engine noise/vehicle speed? The box and transfer both have oil? Could possibly still be a noisey thowout bearing.

Pulling the box is pretty straight forward. I put my engine crane through the door to support and lower it. Going through the passanger door is easier so the crane doesnt hit your steering column. Its a heavy PITA, but do-able.

Grab a new clutch kit (under $190 to your door) and a handbrake kit if it needs it (under $50) and front and rear pinion seals ($10) So much easier to do all this with the box out and driveshafts off.
