Today on a fairly steep hill in my '15, come to a stop on the hill in D.

Let off the gas and start rolling backwards....sort of a grinding noise
and flashing light on the dash (skid?).

Own two other non Toyota vehicles that stay put on a hill
when I let off the gas.

Did a search and nothing conclusive.

Suggestion & experience?

THX!

My 2008 makes weird noises if I roll backward in drive as well.

I believe it's traction control sort of freaking out... :) Not sure.

But if you REALLY wanna hear crazy noises? Put it in crawl control mode. You'll think your truck is falling apart or something...but it's normal. Just a very noisy process.

if you push the 2nd start button / shares the button as the ETC it will hold your rig on a hill with no brake input needed from the driver

Don't follow...2nd start button...where's that? THX

Didn't know that. What I've noticed, but haven't really tested, is that if you hit the brake when you stop on the hill, vs. rolling to a stop and holding yourself with the gas, there is no rollback when you lift off the brake. I'll try to remember to test it though.

Thanks I'll try......what a goofy system!

If you are in 4LO, 1st gear is REALLY low. Starting in 2nd makes sense unless you need a true granny gear in 4LO.

I always thought the 2nd gear start was a torque reduction technique to manage slippage in slippery conditions.

Ya. But if you are spending a day in 4LO, it's pretty annoying to always have to crank through 1st gear unless you really need it. Just me own 2 cents...

Here's the reference from my owner's manual. Still don't get what it's got to do with hill holding?

My familiarity with hill hold on a '15 Acura MDX & '15 P-car requires -0- input....it just works when it's supposed to.

Poor execution on the $80K Toyota

2nd has long been used for starting in snow. But if you have a true granny gear for 1st, sometimes 2nd makes sense.

Another clue. I loaded trailer wheels into the 200 and set off for my tire guy after having selected 2nd gear start. I intended to test the theory when I came back to the farm. I merge onto the Interstate and head north and try to activate radar cruise. No go. Deselected 2nd gear start. Now radar cruise works. I suspect it is because Toyota makes the assumption that conditions are slippery and is voiding the radar option. Once again I think the level of thoughtfulness in their design is amazing.

I thought hill-hold was triggered in the 200 by stomping on the brake. I must not be a good 'stomper' because I could never get it to work more than one in ten tries. Any more I just let the noisy traction control circuit do its thing or use that wonderful, wonderful hand brake.

Don't mean to necro, but I have not found the resolution in my searching, my 2009 Sahara has started doing this a few months ago, never noticed it happen before in the 4 years of ownership. Anyone know what it really is? Don't tell me it's normal because it isn't, the noise it makes is stability control freaking out and it does not hold the vehicle as it use to.
