So lately I've noticed that when I'm on the highway and start going up a hill, if i try to maintain my speed by pushing the truck a little I start to smell something (almost like a burning brake smell). It goes away once I'm on the flats or down hill. Is it just an old non turbo diesel thing that I'm not used to or should i be looking for a solution? I'm still getting my head wrapped around diesel engines. I noticed it more yesterday when I had a few extra people riding along
1981 BJ60 4speed 302000km

any input would be awesome!

I think the 3B ventilates the crankcase fumes to atmosphere. When pushed hard the fumes can increase, especially if the motor is a bit older/worn. Maybe they are somehow venting into your cab? If not that, maybe clutch is slipping a bit? Transmission or transfer case getting hot?

do you have a pyrometer in there?

a non turbo 3b trying to maintain speed on a hill will make somewhat terrifying egt's.

I found with my old ones that when I got to that point that I was pushing it I could use the "nose pyro" to tell when I should back off.

Its crankcase pressure dumping out the "stink tube". Its even more noticeable right after an oil change.... detergents in the 15w40 doing their thing at a guess.

Turbo it
Intercool it
Gauge it up
Smile while you do the speed limit up the steep side of the Malahat with 4 people in your truck.

so its not something i have to be exactly worried about? just take it as it is and know its landcruiser. take a hit and drive it slow? i've been thinking about a pyro anyways, so maybe its something i need to put into motion

You can always pull off after a hard run (leave engine running), and take a sniff under your vehicle near the 'stink pipe' and confirm that is what you're smelling. If you don't like it you can extend it back under your truck further so it doesn't come into the cab with a piece of hose.

On my 2lte from factory it feeds these fumes back into the intake. I didn't like this as it sludges everything up. So I vented mine like a 3B. I vented it too close in the engine bay initially and I smelled it too. So I just ran a longer piece of hose and now I don't smell it anymore. Mine definitely got noticeable after a hard run, but only when I was driving slow could I smell it.

ya it only stinks on the hill, then immediately goes away once you crest, i'll sniff it next time and maybe run a new hose!
thanks for all the input guys!

Ya I know, kinda stumped. The brake light was out too, and all of a sudden started working part way up east main. Just have to take another trip up there and fix the tail light haha

If anyone is good with electrical this totally useless electrician over here could use a favour :|

Check your grounds at the tail lights... quite possibly they're corroded or have poor connections.

And if that fails you'll have to check the wiring harness it's probably corroded or broken someplace. The brake would have to be between the two tail lights i would imagine. (Assuming you have one set of wires to the back of the truck then they split to the two sides).

start by checking the connectors, if you have a multimeter or testlamp you can test with a buddy to see that you have 12V on the appropriate wire when the brake is pressed.
