I run 4.88's in my 89 4runner V6 and 33x12.50's and at highway speeds I keep around 3k on the tach with the and run 65 mph in 5th. I have been driving this way for some time now, about 2 years. This truck now has 286,000 miles on the orig. motor and I can barely keep up with traffic at these speeds. Still runs like a champ and I never really take it over 3k. Hell I even drove it 5 hours to the beach with pretty much all highway driving, just wanted to know if this is could potentially damage the motor over an extended period of time.

Thanks

Is your question is about prolonged time at higher engine speeds? Which engine do you have? 4 cyl engines don't mind higher RPMs for prolonged periods like some of the older American V8s, so you should be fine giving it a bit more throttle to keep up with traffic.

On my '88 p/u I had a heavily built 22re with 4.88 gears and only 32" tires - I regularly had that bugger up to an actual speed of 80-90 on the highway with no problems (a few times a little bit faster than that yet :D)

*edit* nevermind, just saw you have a V6 - not sure on those engines, but you should still be fine with it over 3k on the tach - what's it redline at?

the v6 is not much different. do you have a tach? never mind you do look at your redline. that is when the engine can be hurt. as for any other damage the engine is already broke in so i would not worry about it to much. it is better for your engine to run at different rpm's especially when new or rebuilt.

its all about maintenance man. i try and kill my poor truck every time i drive it.

i run 3800 4000 R's for a few hours on the freeway. she is just fine. granted its a 22RE

my 95 was stolen way back in 1999, they found it sitting along I 70 and they caught the thief. turns out their were two and the one could not drive a stick so she drove that truck in second gear from Charles Town to halfway between Fredrick and Baltimore going 75 and 80 mph before a rod broke. i have never tried it to see how many rpms it would have been doing.

Probably giving people a scare as it wizzed by hitting the rev limiter.....BAH-BAH-BAH-BAH-BAH-BAH-BAH-BAH FREAKING BAH!
