high speed drive train clonk - not the usual!

Gentlemen,

i´ve recently upgraded my 80 to a 100, its a 4.2TDA 1998. It is showing 113,000 miles, which does not worry me.

HOWEVER......... when driving along the motorway, at any speed, if I ease off the accelerator, and stick it back down, the jolt i get is quite severe.

Secondly, this may or may not be related, but if i´m climbing a steady incline, on the road, in second gear (2nd automatic gear that is), the car slows down gradually, then really abruptly downchanges so I can proceed. The jolt again from the down change is enough to shock you!

I changed the rear brake pads last night, and with one rear wheel off the ground, handbrake off and in PARK, there must have been 10 degrees movement in the wheel (forwards and backwards). This indicates to me the diff or something is well worn. Or is it normal??

I´ve searched for this for hours on here, and not found anything similar, as the jolt/clunk/slack take up is rather violent.

What do you pro´s reckon it could be????? before I let the stealers (toyota) have a look?

drive line clunk possible cause

This thread will refer you to a bolt coming loose on front dif mounting bracket and allows dif rotation with sudden maybe violent clunk. Good luck.

I believe it is also possible for the flange at the transfer to be loose causing problems but I haven't been able to find a link.

thanks for that reply! i´ll get under the car the minute the storms subside, sounds like an easy fix!

is it likely that the reason the gears are changing strangely related to this also??

I´ve looked under the car and cannot see anything amiss. Does anyone have a picture of the parts I should check?
