That's a pretty good price if they are the better metal versions!

I'm tracking down the MFG date of the donor truck from 4WA. Thats should help me on my search... Was there a fitment difference in the 3B heads listed above?

If you're talking about those heads from New Zealand on Trademe then I must say that I haven't a clue about their quality.

Their quality may be:

  • poorer than OEM,
  • equivalent to OEM, or
  • better than OEM
Who knows? :meh:

Can someone here in NZ tell us what they think of them (if they have used them)?

PS. I believe there are different heads (non-interchangeable) for the 2977cc B engine so I suspect the same would apply for a 3B.

You need a seller that offers something guaranteed to match your OEM part number head (or perhaps conduct photo-comparisons).

New Head for 3B

I bought a new head this spring from 4Wheel Auto not 100% sure if it was Toyota or after market but when talking to Don he also mentioned that Toyota had replaced the old ones with the higher nickel content. The new head was $1495.

Turns out my major problem was the oil cooler leaking oil into the rad not a cracked head but replaced the old head anyway as it had some cracks and 430,000 km. and prior to adding my turbo thought I would replace anyhting that looked bad.

The gaskets gone hard from heat or eaten from acidic coolant?

I found old gaskets in mine, and i could just see that scenario happen.

No, the PO or someone had taken it off and buffed/ground down the edges then put it back on with silicone to seal it, guess what?? it didn't work, So I had oil throughout my rad and needed a new oil cooler. Had the rad flushed multiple times and there is still oil. Such is life!!

Cheap oil remover , drain coolant , flush with water till no coolant, a bottle of Dawn dishwater detergent , run with all heaters open full nose up high , and keep the water/dawn level topped up parked, dont drive or put load on the engine , idle warm , the oil will float out the rad cap opening. Messy and cheap.

You can buy a special cleaner , and system , but pricey for a one off.

I would use only OEM gaskets on that type of area, Valve cover could be Napa.

To remove Soap / Dawn well , drain and flush with water , then add 4l of vinegar with water(run till temped ) then flush till no vinegar .

Squeaky clean , Now add your quality antifreeze and distilled water (for me 60% Glycol to 40 distilled water, then just top out over time with distilled water.
Then im good for a few years @ 50/50.

3B Cylinder Head from Toyota

So, are these heads available?

I am in the middle of a recon and purchased cylinder head straight from our local (Canadian) Toyota dealer around the first of the year. The price quoted in another post was full retail at $1495. Discounted approx 20% (probably sympathy!) Also, these current Toyota heads are high nickel content.

Machine work added about $150 to face valves, install precups and machine the surface.

Regarding 4Wheel Auto, I priced a head there and was told that they stock OEM Toyota castings. Price was comparable. I got new exhaust valves from Dan at a very reasonable price.
